This is the partially anonymous option. Your name and profile photo are hidden. LinkedIn may still show a general description. For example, it might say consultant in a certain industry, employee at a company, or student at a school.

These details can still be recognizable. If you are the only person with a specific role at a small company, someone may still guess who you are. So this setting gives you more privacy, but not full anonymity.

Private mode

In Private mode, your visit appears as an anonymous LinkedIn member. LinkedIn does not share any other profile information with the owner. Even a Premium member cannot reveal your name.

Private mode does not work backwards

Do not assume that changing the setting later erases an earlier visible visit. Check your setting before you visit the profile. LinkedIn does not say you can reverse old notifications with a later change.

Have you already visited a profile with your name visible? Then the owner may already have seen that visit in the visitor data or through a notification. Switching to Private mode afterward does not automatically undo that earlier information.

Blocking does not erase every old number

LinkedIn says that someone who viewed your profile before being blocked may still count in the total number of visitors. The details are not shown in the same way after blocking.

Blocking is mainly meant to limit future contact and access to your profile. It is not a way to rewrite every historical visitor count.

Public profiles also exist outside LinkedIn

How do you make your LinkedIn account more private?

Private mode only protects your identity during profile visits. So also check the other settings for visibility and data use.

Limit your public profile

Go to Settings & Privacy, Visibility, and the settings for your public profile. There you decide which parts may appear outside LinkedIn and in search engines. You can also turn off the public profile entirely.

Keep in mind that there can be a delay. Google, Bing, and other search engines decide for themselves when to refresh a result. So a change on LinkedIn does not always disappear from search results on the same day.

Check your profile photo

Just check whether your job, company, school, or industry would still make you easy to recognize. For someone with a unique role, this middle option can be almost as identifiable as a visible name.

Make the choice temporary. For example, put a note in your calendar about when you want to review Private mode again. LinkedIn saves the change automatically. That makes it easy to forget that the selected mode is still active.
