Telegram invite link not working: solutions

Telegram uitnodigingslink werkt niet: oplossingen

Is your Telegram invite link not working? First, check whether the link is complete, still active, and not past its expiry date or usage limit. Then open the link directly in the latest version of Telegram. If the link no longer works for anyone, an authorized admin usually needs to create a new invite link.

The problem is not always on your phone. An admin may also have revoked the link. The link may require approval as well. And if your account is on the deleted users list, reinstalling, clearing the cache, or logging in again often will not help.

Below, you will start with the fastest checks. Then we explain the main causes one by one. That way, you do not change anything unnecessarily and you can also see faster when you need the admin or Telegram support.

Which checks should you do first?

Do these four checks before you delete the app, clear the cache, or log in again:

  1. Copy the full link and open it directly.
  2. Update Telegram through the official store for your device.
  3. Ask one other person to test exactly the same link.
  4. Ask the admin whether the link is still active and whether your account is allowed access.

If the link works for someone else, the cause is probably your account, app, device, or connection. If the link does not work for anyone, it is usually expired, revoked, copied incorrectly, or restricted.

Possible cause Recognizable sign Best solution Expected time
Link is incomplete Telegram does not open or says the link is invalid Ask for the original link and copy it in full A few minutes
Expiry date has been reached Telegram says the link has expired The admin creates or shares an active link A few minutes
Usage limit has been reached The link worked before and stops after a number of members The admin increases the limit or creates a new link A few minutes
Link has been revoked The same link no longer works for anyone Use a new link from an admin A few minutes
Approval is required You see that a request has been sent Wait for admin approval Depends on the admin
Account is on the deleted users list Others can join, but you cannot The admin removes you from the deleted users list A few minutes to a day
App is outdated The link opens incorrectly or the join button does not respond Update Telegram and restart the app Five to ten minutes
Browser does not open Telegram The web page keeps loading or the app does not start Copy the link into Telegram or choose Open in Telegram A few minutes
Temporary outage or network issue Chats also load slowly or not at all Switch connection and check Telegram status Usually temporary

An invite link for a private group or channel normally uses a Telegram address with a unique code. A modern link often looks like t.me/+code. Older invite links may use a different Telegram format.

The unique code is the most important part. When copying from an email, document, or chat, the last character may be missing. Sometimes a website also adds a period, bracket, or space at the end. Telegram then does not recognize the link correctly.

It is better not to compare a long link manually character by character. Ask the admin to share the link again using the Copy link button. Then ask the admin to test it themselves with an account that is not yet a member.

Which quick check can you do?

Press and hold the link and choose Copy. Then paste it into your Saved Messages in Telegram. Open the link from that message. This avoids problems with a browser, mail app, or broken line.

Do not use a screenshot of the invite link. You cannot open a screenshot directly. Also, when retyping it, someone can easily miss or type a character wrong.

Telegram gives admins several settings for invite links. A link can have an expiry date, a usage limit, or require approval. An admin can also revoke the link completely. Only an authorized admin can check and change these settings.

Telegram lets admins set an expiry date for a private invite link. After that date, the link no longer works. This is useful for an event, course, temporary promotion, or private group that should only be accessible for a short time.

Only the admin can see which conditions are attached to the created link. So do not only ask whether the link is correct. Ask specifically about the following points:

  • Does this link have an expiry date?
  • Has that expiry date already been reached?
  • Is a usage limit set?
  • Has someone revoked the link?
  • Does my request need approval first?

You cannot fix an expired link yourself as a normal user. The admin must adjust the settings or share a new link. Use the guide on how to create a Telegram invite link if you are the admin.

An admin can decide how many people may join through one link. Once that limit is reached, the link will not allow new members anymore.

That explains why a link worked before and later stopped working. It does not immediately mean Telegram is having an outage. Ask the admin to check the current usage and the set limit.

An admin can also create separate links for a campaign, class, customer group, event, or staff team. That makes it easier to see which link is used where. It also prevents one shared link from spreading everywhere.

A revoked link stops working right away. Telegram also calls this withdrawing or revoking. Admins often do this when a link has leaked, been shared incorrectly, or is no longer needed.

A revoked link does not become active again if you update the app, reinstall it, or clear the cache. You need a new active link from an authorized admin.

An admin can manage several invite links at the same time. So revoking one campaign link does not have to mean all other links stop working. Always ask for the status of the exact link you are using.

Are you the admin yourself? Then do not remove old links casually. First check where they were published. Then create a replacement link and update important pages, emails, and QR codes.

Does an admin need to approve your participation first?

Telegram invite links can be set so that every new member needs approval. When you tap such a link, you do not join right away. Telegram first sends a request to the admins.

So a message saying your request has been sent does not mean the link is broken. You must wait until an admin accepts your request.

If the wait is long, ask whether the group or channel is still actively managed. An admin may miss pending requests. Do not keep sending new requests. One request is enough.

Are you an admin? Then check the list of pending requests and your notifications for new applications. Agree within your team who reviews requests and which rules apply.

Is your account on the deleted users list?

When an admin removes and blocks someone from a channel or group, a new invite link may still not work for that person. Telegram explains in its official support materials for problems that the admin must first remove that person from the deleted users list.

You can recognize this problem by these signs:

  • the same link works for other people;
  • your app and internet connection work normally;
  • a new link gives you the same error again;
  • you were a member before and were removed later.

Ask the owner or an authorized admin to search for your account in the deleted users list. After the restriction is lifted, you can try the invite link again.

Do not create a new Telegram account right away to bypass the block. First discuss why you were removed. The admin may decide who gets access to a private group or channel.

Is there a Telegram outage right now?

A real outage is more likely when not only the invite link fails. Check whether normal chats load, messages send, and media open. Also ask someone on another network whether Telegram works normally.

Do these checks:

  1. Open an existing chat.
  2. Send a normal message.
  3. Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or the other way around.
  4. Try the link on a second device.
  5. Check an official Telegram notice or several reliable outage sources.

During a widespread outage, do not change important admin settings. Wait a while and try again later. Revoking and recreating links can create extra confusion while Telegram itself is temporarily having problems.

A public outage site shows user reports, but it does not always prove that Telegram has a general outage. So compare several signals and see whether other Telegram functions are also failing.

The Telegram app is outdated

Older versions of Telegram may handle new link formats or join features less well. Update the app through the App Store, Google Play, or Telegram’s official download page.

After the update, open the app normally once. Check whether chats load and only then try the invite link again.

The browser opens the wrong Telegram app

On some devices, Telegram and another version of Telegram are installed side by side. A browser can then open the wrong app. Copy the link and paste it into Saved Messages in the app tied to your account.

You can also choose Open in Telegram in the browser. After that, check carefully which account is active before you tap the join button.

You are signed in with the wrong account

Telegram supports multiple accounts. You may be trying to join with an account that is not allowed access or was previously removed by an admin.

Check your phone number and profile before you tap Join. Never share a login code with an admin. A real admin does not need your Telegram login code to let you into a group or channel.

The connection blocks or interrupts Telegram

An unstable connection can cause the invite page to open but the join to fail. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. Temporarily turn off a poorly working proxy or VPN and test the link again.

Only do this if it is safe and allowed on your network. On a company network, the network admin may intentionally limit certain services.

The device date or time is wrong

A system date that is far off can disrupt secure connections. Set your device date and time to automatic. Then fully close Telegram and restart the app.

How do you solve the problem step by step?

Work from safe and simple to more advanced. Test the link after each step. That way, you can better see which action solved the problem.

Step 1: ask for the original link again

Only use the link from the owner, admin, or official page. Avoid forwarded links from unknown groups. Ask the admin to share the link with the built-in copy button.

Step 2: open the link inside Telegram

Paste the link into your Saved Messages and tap it. This rules out many problems with browsers, mail apps, and incorrectly set default apps.

Step 3: check the app, account, and connection

Update Telegram. Check which account is active. Switch networks once and restart the app. Also check whether normal chats and messages work.

Step 4: let another account test the link

If the link does not work for anyone, the admin needs to check the link settings. If it only does not work for you, check your account status, pending request, and deleted users list.

Step 5: ask the admin to review the conditions

Have the expiry date, usage limit, revoked status, and required approval checked. If needed, let the admin create a new separate link and test it first.

Step 6: check whether your request is still pending

If you see a message about a sent request, wait for approval. Ask the admin to open the list of pending join requests.

Step 7: only create a new link if you are the admin

Create a new link when the old one has expired or been revoked. Test the new link before you share it widely. Also update old QR codes, emails, documents, and web pages.

When does clearing the cache or logging in again help?

Clearing the cache helps mainly with old local data, frozen previews, or media that displays incorrectly. It does not restore an invite link that has expired, been revoked, or is limited.

First use Telegram’s built-in storage settings. Clearing temporary cache should not delete your cloud chats. Locally saved media may need to be downloaded again.

Logging in again is rarely the first solution. You need access to your phone number and possibly extra verification. Secret chats are also tied to the device and do not belong to Telegram’s normal cloud storage. So do not log out if you are not sure you can safely log back in.

Before you log out, always try these solutions first:

  • close the app completely;
  • restart the device;
  • update Telegram;
  • open the link inside Telegram;
  • use another network;
  • ask the admin to check the link.

When should you contact Telegram support?

Contact Telegram support only after you have ruled out the common causes. Support cannot decide for you that an admin of a private group or channel must let you in.

It makes sense to contact support when:

  • multiple valid links keep failing in strange ways;
  • your account shows unexpected technical errors;
  • the app keeps freezing after an official update;
  • you can repeat the same error on several devices;
  • you suspect your account is limited because of a technical issue.

Note your device, operating system, Telegram version, the time, and the exact error message. You can take a screenshot if needed, but do not make the full private invite link or unique code public.

For normal access problems, the group or channel admin is the right first contact. Only an authorized admin can create a new link, approve a request, or lift a removal.

As an admin, you can prevent many problems with a simple system for creating, testing, and managing invite links.

  • Give each link a clear internal title.
  • Use separate links for your website, email, event, and partners.
  • Only set an expiry date when it is really needed.
  • Check the usage limit for a large campaign.
  • Assign someone to review join requests.
  • Revoke leaked or old links.
  • Test every new link with an account that is not yet a member.
  • Keep a list of pages and QR codes where the link appears.
  • Do not share private links in public search results.

A private link that is publicly available on the internet gives you very little control in practice. Telegram also notes in the Channels FAQ that a private channel with a publicly available invite link may be treated as public in content disputes.

If you do not yet have a good structure, start with how to create a Telegram group. Use a group rather than a channel when members mainly need to talk to each other.

If your channel is working well and you want to grow its reach, you can buy Telegram group followers, Telegram auto views, or Telegram post views. Before you start, always first check whether your invite link and access settings work properly.

Which screenshots make the solution clear?

Do you want to explain the problem to an admin, colleague, or client? Then add three clear screenshots with markings.

Screenshot one: show the error message after opening an invalid or expired link. Mark only the error text and hide the unique code of the invite link.

Screenshot two: show the admin screen with invite links. Mark the expiry date, usage limit, join requests, and revoke option. Preferably use a test channel for this.

Screenshot three: show the list of pending or deleted users. Mark where an admin approves a request or lifts a restriction. Hide names, phone numbers, and profile photos.

Why did the Telegram link work yesterday?

The expiry date or usage limit may have been reached in the meantime. An admin may also have revoked the link. Ask about the conditions and status of the exact link you are using.

Does updating Telegram help?

Yes, an update can help with an outdated app or a problem opening links. An update does not fix a link that has expired, been revoked, or is full.

Does clearing the cache remove my Telegram chats?

The built-in cache mainly contains temporary local files. Cloud chats normally remain available. Images, videos, and other media may need to load again. Always check carefully which storage option you choose.

Does the same solution work on iPhone and Android?

The logic is the same on both devices. Buttons and menus may be in different places. On both iPhone and Android, check the link, app version, active account, connection, and admin permission.

Why can someone else join through the link, but I cannot?

You may be signed in with the wrong account, still waiting for approval, or listed among deleted users. Ask an authorized admin to check your account status.

Can I activate an expired invite link myself?

No, not as a normal member. An authorized admin must adjust the link settings or create a new invite link.

Which solution fits your Telegram problem?

If the link does not work for anyone, ask the admin to check the expiry date, limit, and revoked status. If the link works for others, then check your account, join request, and any listing under deleted users. If Telegram itself does not open properly, update the app and test another connection.

Do not make large changes right away. Do one test at a time. That way, you can see where the problem is and which solution works. When the old link is truly no longer usable, the admin must test a new link and replace it everywhere it matters.

If videos or other functions also do not work, check separately why Telegram videos are not downloading. That helps you keep an invite-link problem separate from a media problem.
