Using bookmarks on X/Twitter

Bookmarks gebruiken op X/Twitter

With Bookmarks on X, you save a post privately so you can find it again later in seconds. Open the post and tap the bookmark icon. Don’t see that icon? Use the share icon and choose Add to Bookmarks. You can then find your saved posts under Bookmarks in the navigation menu.

Only you can view your collection. The author does not see that your account saved the post. X may show the total number of Bookmarks on a post, but that number does not reveal which accounts saved it.

Bookmarks are useful for recipes, research, long threads, customer questions, content ideas, and posts you want to discuss during a Space. Below, you’ll learn how to save, remove, organize, and find Bookmarks on iPhone, Android, and desktop.

What is a Bookmark on X?

A Bookmark is a private saved reference to a post. The original post stays with the author. X does not make a separate copy that you own.

That means the following:

  • you can open the post later from your own Bookmarks;
  • other visitors to your profile cannot see your collection;
  • the author cannot see which specific accounts made a Bookmark;
  • the post may disappear if the author deletes it;
  • access to a protected post still depends on the author;
  • you can remove a Bookmark at any time.

Use a Bookmark when you want to save something without publicly reacting to the post. You do not need to like, reply to, or repost it.

What is the difference between Bookmarks, likes, and Lists?

Feature Main purpose Who can see it? Useful for
Bookmark Save one post privately Only you can see your list Reading or using later
Like Show appreciation The author sees your like Showing support or interest
List Create a timeline with chosen accounts Public or private, depending on the setting Following topics and accounts
Repost Share a post again People who view your profile or timeline Giving a post more reach

Likes have been less public since 2024, but they are still an interaction with the author. Want to know exactly what others can still see? Then read why X/Twitter messages are not showing up.

A List contains accounts and shows their new posts in a separate timeline. A Bookmark, on the other hand, saves one specific post. Use a List to follow accounts over time and a Bookmark to save a specific source or post.

Want to do more than save posts and also build more visible interaction around your own content? Then, alongside your regular content strategy, you can for example buy Twitter likes. This does not change the privacy or function of Bookmarks.

Saving and finding Bookmarks

How do you save a post as a Bookmark?

In a recent version of the X app, this usually works like this:

  1. Open X and find the post you want to save.
  2. Open the full post if the bookmark icon is not visible right away.
  3. Tap the bookmark icon.
  4. Wait for confirmation that the post has been saved.
  5. If needed, choose the option to view all your Bookmarks.

Don’t see a bookmark icon? Tap the share icon and choose Add to Bookmarks. X has used both paths in different versions. That means the exact location of the button can vary.

The author does not receive a notification with your name. You also do not need to like a post before saving it as a Bookmark.

Where do you find saved Bookmarks?

Open the profile menu or sidebar and choose Bookmarks. There you will see your saved posts in a separate timeline.

Tap or click a post to open the full discussion, media, and replies. The content remains with the original author. The context can therefore change if the author edits the post, removes replies, or protects the account.

Using multiple X accounts? Each account has its own collection. A Bookmark saved with a business account does not automatically appear in your personal account.

How do you use Bookmarks on iPhone?

Here is how to save a post on iPhone:

  1. Open the post.
  2. Tap the bookmark icon.
  3. If needed, use the share icon and choose Bookmark or Add to Bookmarks.
  4. Check that the confirmation appears.

Here is how to view your saved posts:

  1. Tap your profile picture.
  2. Choose Bookmarks.
  3. Open the post you want.

Want to remove one Bookmark? Tap the highlighted bookmark icon again. In an older layout, open the share menu and choose Remove from Bookmarks.

How does it work on Android?

The steps on Android are almost the same:

  1. Find and open the post.
  2. Tap the bookmark icon or use the share menu.
  3. Then open the navigation menu.
  4. Choose Bookmarks to view your saved posts.
  5. Tap the save button again to remove a post from your Bookmarks.

Update the X app if the button is missing or not responding. The exact location of the button can change from one version to another.

How do you use Bookmarks on X.com?

On a desktop or laptop, follow these steps:

  1. Log in at X.com.
  2. Find the post you want to save.
  3. Click the bookmark icon or use the share menu.
  4. Choose Add to Bookmarks if that text appears.

Mobile browser Share menu or icon Menu > Bookmarks The session has expired

Privacy and Bookmark counts

Are X Bookmarks really private?

Yes. X says Bookmarks are private and can only be viewed by you within your account. Other people cannot open the collection through your profile.

That does not mean X does not process any data. X needs to link the saved item to your account so it can show the collection to you. That is why you should not give account access to unknown third-party tools that promise to analyze your Bookmarks.

The author may be able to see the total number of Bookmarks on a post. Other visitors may also see that counter sometimes if it is available in their interface. According to the official explanation, X only shows the total number and not the names of the accounts.

Can someone see that you saved their post?

No, not through a list of names. The author cannot see that your specific account made the Bookmark.

The total number of Bookmarks may increase, though. From that, the author cannot tell who saved the post or why someone saved it. Maybe someone wants to read it later, use it as a source, discuss it in a meeting, or keep it because of an error.

So do not make assumptions about the intention behind the counter. A Bookmark is not an automatic recommendation. It is also not proof that someone is positive about the content or planning to buy something.

How do Bookmark counts work?

X describes the Bookmark count as the total number of times a post has been saved. The identity of the accounts behind that number remains private.

The visibility of this counter can differ by device and interface. The official help page specifically mentions iOS. So check the current display of a post in your app before using numbers in a report.

A Bookmark count shows that people used the save button. It does not tell you:

  • who those people are;
  • whether they actually read the post later;
  • why they are saving it;
  • whether they feel positive about the content;
  • whether the saved post will remain available.

So combine the count with reach, likes, replies, reposts, and clicks when judging a post’s performance. If you want to reach more people who can see your content more often, you can also buy Twitter followers. Always treat Bookmarks and followers as different metrics.

Organizing and removing Bookmarks

How do you create folders for your Bookmarks?

Bookmark folders are a Premium feature. X lists these folders among its paid features. You can, for example, sort saved posts into Research, Content ideas, Customers, and Read later.

Depending on the app version, creating a folder works roughly like this:

  1. First save a post.
  2. After saving, choose Add to folder.
  3. Create a new folder.
  4. Give the folder a short and clear name.
  5. Select the folder where the post should go.

You can also create a new folder from Bookmarks. According to X, each saved post also remains in All Bookmarks.

Removing a post from a folder is not always the same as deleting the Bookmark completely. So check whether the post is still in All Bookmarks.

How do you organize many saved posts without chaos?

Without a fixed system, your collection quickly becomes a second unread timeline. A few simple rules help you stay organized.

Only save something with a purpose

Ask yourself when you will need the post. Is the content meant for today, for an active project, or as a lasting reference? If you do not have a clear purpose, you usually do not need to save the post.

Set a regular cleanup moment

For example, review your newest Bookmarks every Friday. Remove what is no longer useful and handle open action points right away. That keeps your list short and useful.

Use folders for active projects

If you have Premium, do not create dozens of vague folders. Choose a small number of clear projects. A folder like August campaign often works better than a broad folder like Interesting.

Store important information outside X too

A Bookmark is not a permanent archive. Write your own note or save the source according to the usage rights if you really need the information later.

Keep the context

Note why a post is useful. A loose statistic without a date, explanation, or source is hard to judge later. Also check whether a thread is complete before using the information.

Can you delete all Bookmarks at once?

Yes. In its official explanation, X mentions a menu at the top of the Bookmarks timeline that lets you delete all saved Bookmarks. The exact wording and location can vary by app version.

This action only removes your saved references. The original posts from other accounts remain. The authors do not get a notification that you cleared your collection.

Using folders? Afterward, also check All Bookmarks. If in doubt, test with one unimportant post first so you know exactly what a button does.

Problems with saved posts

Why has a saved post disappeared?

A Bookmark can become invisible or unavailable for several reasons. Check the possible causes below.

The author deleted the post

A Bookmark does not keep an independent copy. If the author removes the content, you can no longer open the post normally.

The account is protected

You must remain an approved follower to view a protected post. If you lose access to the account, the saved reference no longer works.

The account is suspended or deleted

The content may disappear if an account is suspended or deleted. A Bookmark does not bypass the status of an account.

Sensitive content is hidden

Your settings or age may prevent a post from opening. If needed, check how to fix X/Twitter DMs not working.

You are using a different account

Each X account has its own collection. Switch back to the account with which you originally saved the post.

X is not loading the list properly

Check your connection, refresh the page, and try opening the post through X.com. You can also log out and log back in, or update the app.

Are several parts of your profile or timeline missing? Then read why my X/Twitter messages are not showing up.

Using Bookmarks smartly

Can you use Bookmarks during an X Space?

Yes. X mentions Bookmarks as a tool for hosts and speakers to prepare posts they want to share during a Space.

Prepare a small selection in advance and put the posts in the right order. Open each post briefly before the broadcast and check whether it still exists. Share only information that fits the topic and respect privacy and copyright.

With Premium folders, you can create a separate folder for the Space. Without a folder, you can gather the newest saved posts right before going live. If you also want more visibility for a broadcast, you can start an X Space. Still check each source yourself during preparation.

Which checklist helps you use Bookmarks smartly?

  1. First save one harmless test post.
  2. Open Bookmarks through the navigation menu.
  3. Check that the post appears in the list.
  4. Delete the test post and save it again.
  5. With Premium, only create folders you truly use.
  6. Clean up your collection every week.
  7. Store important information outside X as well.
  8. Always check the current context before sharing.

Which screenshots make the feature clear?

Do you want to explain the feature to a colleague, client, or team? Then use two annotated screenshots from a test account:

  1. A post with the bookmark icon highlighted, along with the confirmation that the post was saved.
  2. The private Bookmarks page, with the delete or folder menu highlighted.

Do not show sensitive saved content and make private details unreadable. Preferably use your own harmless test post.

Frequently asked questions about Bookmarks on X

Can someone view my X Bookmarks?

No. X says only you can view your Bookmarks within your account. Other visitors cannot open the collection through your profile.

Does an author see that I saved their post as a Bookmark?

The author does not see which specific account saved the post. A total Bookmark count may be visible, but it does not show names.

Are Bookmark folders free?

The standard Bookmark feature is available as a save function. X lists folders as part of Premium. Check your subscription and the current interface to see whether you can create folders.

Can I recover a deleted post through my Bookmark?

No. A Bookmark is a reference, not your own copy. If the author deletes the post, you cannot restore it through your Bookmark.

Which is better: a like or a Bookmark?

Use a like to show appreciation and a Bookmark to save something privately. The author can see your like, but not your identity behind a Bookmark.

Can I delete all my Bookmarks at once?

Yes. X describes an option at the top of the Bookmarks timeline to remove everything. Make sure you really want to clear the whole collection before you confirm the action.

What is the best first step?

Save one useful test post and then open Bookmarks from the menu. Remove the post again so you know both actions. After that, create your regular collection.

Use Bookmarks mainly as a temporary working library, not as a permanent archive. Clean up regularly, store important sources somewhere else too, and remember that only your list is private. The original post remains under the author’s control.
