Hide ‘Last seen’ on Telegram

β€˜Last seen’ verbergen op Telegram

You can hide your Last seen on Telegram through Settings > Privacy and Security > Last Seen & Online. There, you choose who may see your exact last activity. You can select Everybody, My Contacts, or Nobody. With exceptions, you can always allow certain people or exclude them.

There is a trade-off, though. If you do not share your exact Last seen with someone, you usually will not see their exact time either. Telegram then shows a broad estimate, such as recently seen or seen a long time ago.

Hiding Last seen does not always make you invisible either. Someone may briefly see you as online when you send them a message, read a private message, or type in a shared chat. Below, you will learn how all settings and exceptions work.

Where do you find the Last seen setting on Telegram?

On recent mobile versions of Telegram, you usually follow these steps:

  1. Open Telegram.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Open Privacy and Security.
  4. Tap Last Seen & Online.
  5. Choose Everybody, My Contacts, or Nobody.
  6. Add exceptions if needed.
  7. Go back and check that your choice was saved.

The wording can vary a little by device or app version. For example, you may see Last Seen, Last Seen & Online, or a similar label. The feature is always under the privacy settings. So you will not find it in notifications or general chat settings.

Device Path Main choice Common mistake
iPhone Settings > Privacy and Security > Last Seen & Online Everybody, contacts, or nobody Exceptions are forgotten
Android Menu or Settings > Privacy and Security > Last Seen & Online Everybody, contacts, or nobody The user expects the online status to disappear completely
Desktop Menu > Settings > Privacy and Security > Last Seen & Online The same privacy choice An older app version shows a different layout
Telegram Web Menu > Settings > Privacy and Security The available privacy choice Not all options are in the same place as in the mobile app

Can’t find the setting? Update Telegram first. Then reopen the app and check Privacy and Security again. The settings are linked to your account. So a change on your phone normally also applies when you use Telegram on a computer.

Which option should you choose to hide Last seen?

What does Everybody mean?

Every Telegram user can see your exact Last seen, except people you exclude separately. This choice works well if being reachable matters and you do not mind much visibility.

Be careful with public groups. People who find you there may be able to open your profile. With Everybody, they may also be able to see your exact last activity, unless you exclude them through an exception.

What does My Contacts mean?

People who count as contacts in Telegram can see your exact Last seen. Other users only get a broad estimate. You can adjust this per person with exceptions.

Check which contacts Telegram has synced. An old phone contact may still be in Telegram. Remove unwanted synced contacts if needed. Then review your Last seen exceptions again.

My Contacts is a good middle ground for many users. People you know can see when you were last active, while unknown users do not get an exact time.

What does Nobody mean?

With Nobody, nobody sees your exact Last seen by default. Other users still see a broad estimate. Through an exception, you can allow, for example, your partner, a family member, or a colleague to see the exact time.

This choice offers the most privacy, but it does not make you fully invisible. The short exceptions for your online status still apply. Read receipts and the typing indicator are also separate from this setting.

How do you use exceptions for certain people?

Telegram offers precise exceptions. That means you do not have to use the same rule for everyone. Exceptions override your general choice.

Depending on your base setting, you may see options such as:

  • Always Share With for people who may see your exact time;
  • Never Share With for people who may not see your exact time.

Example: choose My Contacts and add your employer to Never Share With. Your other contacts will then see the exact time, but your employer will not.

Another example: choose Nobody and add your partner to Always Share With. Only that chosen exception will then see your exact Last seen.

Check your exceptions after adding or removing contacts. A list that made sense years ago may now be outdated. Also check whether the same person is not accidentally in more than one list.

Want to hide Last seen for just one person? Then you do not need to choose Nobody right away. Select Everybody or My Contacts and add only that person to Never Share With.

What does someone see when your exact Last seen is hidden?

Telegram does not show a blank field when your exact time is hidden. The other person usually sees a broad category. According to the official Telegram FAQ, there are four possible values:

  • Recently seen: somewhere between one second and about two to three days ago.
  • Seen within a week: somewhere between about two to three days and seven days ago.
  • Seen within a month: somewhere between about six to seven days and one month ago.
  • Seen a long time ago: more than one month ago. According to Telegram, blocked users always see this value.

These broad ranges give an idea of whether someone still uses Telegram, without showing the exact time. So from recently seen, you cannot tell whether someone was active one minute ago or two days ago.

Activity or data What does someone see without access to your exact time? Important exception
Exact Last seen time Not visible People in Always Share With can see it
Broad last activity Recently, within a week, within a month, or a long time ago Blocked users see a long time ago
You send that person a message You may briefly appear online Telegram mentions a period of about thirty seconds
You read a private message from that person You may briefly appear online This applies to a direct chat
You type in the chat Online or typing may be visible briefly This can also happen in a group you both belong to
You read a channel post Regular subscribers do not get a personal online alert Admins do see general view counters
Read receipt in a private chat This is separate from Last seen Two check marks can still show that a message was read

Who can still see you as online?

Telegram also applies Last seen rules to your online status. People with whom you share your exact Last seen can normally also see when you are online.

According to Telegram, there are a few short exceptions. Someone can see you as online for about thirty seconds when you:

  • send that person a message in a private chat;
  • send a message in a group you both belong to;
  • read a private message from that person;
  • send a status such as typing to the chat or a shared group.

These exceptions make sense. When you respond directly or type, it is already clear that you are active. Telegram therefore does not hide that moment completely.

Want to stop one person from seeing you online without ever talking to them? Then do not share your Last seen with that person and do none of these visible actions. Telegram also mentions blocking as another way to stop someone from seeing your online status.

Keep in mind that the online status can remain visible for a short while after an action. That does not immediately mean your setting is wrong. So test it first without sending messages, reading messages, or typing.

How do you make your Telegram account more private?

Last seen is only one part of your privacy. Open Settings > Privacy and Security and review your other data and permissions too.

Who sees your phone number?

Set who may see your phone number and who can find you through that number. These two settings are not always the same. Use the separate guide on hide your phone number on Telegram if you want to understand all options properly.

Who sees your profile photo?

A public profile photo can reveal more about you than your Last seen. Choose a neutral image or limit visibility when that fits your situation better. Also check any old profile photos.

Who may add you to Groups and Channels?

Limit unwanted invitations to groups and channels. Use exceptions for people or groups you trust. That way, strangers will not keep adding you to new communities.

Who may call you?

Check the Telegram call setting. If needed, limit who can call you and which connection method is used. This can help reduce unwanted calls and the sharing of technical data.

Which devices are signed in?

Open the list of active sessions or devices. End any session you do not recognize. Turn on two-step verification and use a strong, unique password.

Do you still need your public username?

A username makes you easy to find without needing your phone number. That can be useful, but it can also bring unwanted messages. You can change your Telegram username or remove it completely.

How do you test whether Last seen is really hidden?

Test your setting with another account that is not in your exceptions. That way, you can see what a normal user actually sees.

  1. On your main account, choose Nobody or My Contacts.
  2. Check the exception lists.
  3. Open your profile from the test account.
  4. See whether only a broad category is shown.
  5. Do not send a message or type during the first test.
  6. Also do not read a private message from your main account.
  7. Then intentionally send a message to check the short online exception.

Test both with a saved contact and with an unknown account if your settings depend on that. Afterwards, remove test accounts from your contacts and exceptions if you no longer need them.

Still seeing an exact time? Check whether the test account is in Always Share With. Also check whether your general choice was saved correctly and whether the Telegram app is updated.

Which mistakes do users make often?

Choosing Nobody and forgetting exceptions

An old exception can still see your exact time. Open both exception lists and check every name. Exceptions take priority over the general setting.

Thinking online will never appear again

During direct contact, Telegram may briefly show you as online. That is part of the official behavior and does not automatically mean your privacy setting failed.

Confusing Last seen with read receipts

Hiding your time does not automatically remove check marks, the typing indicator, or other signs of activity.

Giving a tracking app access

Never give login codes, passwords, or account access to services that promise hidden information. Protect your own account first.

Forgetting that privacy is mutual

If you do not share your exact time, you usually will not see the other person’s exact time either. You only get a broad estimate.

Not checking synced contacts

Old phone numbers may still be saved as contacts in Telegram. That can make someone fall under My Contacts when you do not expect it.

Which screenshots make the setting clear?

Add two clear screenshots with highlights if you explain the steps to someone else.

Screenshot one: show Privacy and Security > Last Seen & Online. Mark Everybody, My Contacts, and Nobody. Add the text: β€œChoose who may see your exact time.”

Screenshot two: show the exceptions. Mark Always Share With and Never Share With. Add the text: β€œExceptions override the general choice.”

Use a test account for this. Hide names, phone numbers, profile photos, and other personal details before you share or publish a screenshot.

FAQ about hiding Last seen on Telegram

Can someone see that I hid my Last seen?

Telegram does not show a special warning. The person sees a broad category instead of an exact time. They can, however, infer that your exact time is not available.

Can I hide my Last seen from one person only?

Yes. Choose a general setting and add that person to Never Share With. Then check that the person is not also in another exception list.

Why do I see Last seen recently for someone else?

That person does not share the exact time with you, or you do not share your exact time with that person. According to Telegram, recently can mean anything from one second to about two to three days.

Why does someone still see me online?

You may have sent a message, read a private message from that person, or typed in a shared chat. Telegram can then briefly show your online status.

Does blocking hide my online status?

Telegram mentions blocking as a way to stop someone from seeing you online. According to the Telegram FAQ, a blocked user always sees seen a long time ago.

Does hiding Last seen work the same on iPhone and Android?

Yes. The privacy rules are the same. The location, layout, and wording of the buttons can vary a little by device and app version.

Can I completely stop someone from seeing that I use Telegram?

Not with the Last seen setting alone. A broad activity category, read receipts, typing, direct messages, and public profile data can still reveal something. So review all privacy settings.

Why can’t I see someone else’s exact Last seen anymore?

This can be due to your own privacy choice. When you do not share your exact time with someone, Telegram usually will not show you that person’s exact time either.

Which privacy setting should you check first now?

Open Last Seen & Online and first check the general choice. Then open both exception lists. Remove names that no longer belong there and only add people you intentionally want to give access to.

Then test the result with a second account without sending, reading, or typing right away. That way, you can see exactly what is hidden. After that, also check your phone number, profile photo, username, and active sessions. Together, these settings give you much more privacy than hiding Last seen alone.
