Enable sensitive content on X (Twitter)

Gevoelige inhoud inschakelen op X (Twitter)

Want to view sensitive content on X? Log in to x.com, open Settings and privacy, go to Privacy and safety, and choose Content you see. Then turn on Display media that may contain sensitive content. Also open X search settings and turn off Hide sensitive content if you want to see those posts in search results.

On an iPhone, the viewing setting is sometimes missing in the X app. In that case, use x.com in Safari or another browser. According to X, the change also applies to searches in the apps. It may take a few minutes before the new setting works everywhere.

This setting does not remove every warning. Your age, account status, local rules, and X rules can still limit certain content.

What does X mean by sensitive content?

X uses warnings for media that not everyone wants to see unexpectedly. Think of nudity, sexual content, or graphic violence. X’s exact rules decide which content is allowed, limited, or banned.

A sensitive-content warning does not automatically mean the whole account is banned. Often only the image or video is placed behind a screen. You then have to choose whether you want to open the media.

There are two different settings:

  1. The setting that lets you view possibly sensitive media from other people.
  2. The setting that marks media you post yourself as possibly sensitive.

People often mix these up. Do you only want to see more content from others? Then change the setting under Content you see. Do you regularly post sensitive media yourself? Then use the separate label under Your posts.

Where can you find the setting for viewing sensitive media?

The most reliable route is through the web version of X:

  1. Go to x.com and log in.
  2. Open More.
  3. Choose Settings and privacy.
  4. Open Privacy and safety.
  5. Choose Content you see.
  6. Turn on Display media that may contain sensitive content.

The English menu labels may change slightly after an update. In that case, look for Privacy and safety, Content you see, and the option about potentially sensitive media.

Do not close the screen right away if you also want to adjust search results. X search has a separate Safe Search setting. This setting controls whether sensitive posts are hidden in search results.

How do you turn on sensitive content on Android?

On Android, the setting may be available directly in the X app. Open your profile menu and go to Settings and privacy. Choose Privacy and safety and open Content you see. Then turn on the option for potentially sensitive media.

Can’t find the switch in the app? Use Chrome or another browser:

  1. Open x.com.
  2. Sign in with the same X account.
  3. Open Settings and privacy.
  4. Go to Privacy and safety.
  5. Open Content you see.
  6. Turn on the sensitive-media option.

Then open the X app again. It may take a while before every screen uses the new setting.

Also check that you are signed in with the same account in both the browser and the app. Use more than one profile? Then each account has its own settings.

How do you turn on sensitive content on iPhone?

On an iPhone, the setting is not always visible in the X app. X points to the web version for this change. Use Safari or another browser:

  1. Open Safari and go to x.com.
  2. Log in to your X account.
  3. Open the navigation menu.
  4. Choose Settings and privacy.
  5. Go to Privacy and safety.
  6. Open Content you see.
  7. Turn on Display media that may contain sensitive content.

After that, go back to the X app and refresh the post you want to view. Not working right away? Close the app completely and open it again. If needed, wait a few minutes before trying again.

Do not delete the app as your first step. The setting belongs to your account and is most clearly changed through x.com. Reinstalling the app usually does not fix the wrong account setting.

How do you adjust the setting on a computer?

Open x.com and click More on the left. Then choose Settings and privacy, Privacy and safety, and Content you see. Next, tick the option that shows potentially sensitive media.

A computer is often the easiest route. You can see more menu items at once and then check the separate X search settings right away.

Device Best route What you turn on Common mistake
iPhone x.com via Safari Display media that may contain sensitive content Only checking in the iOS app
Android X app or x.com The same sensitive-media option Changing the setting on the wrong account
Computer x.com, More, and Settings The media option under Content you see Forgetting the separate search filter

The setting is saved automatically. After changing it, check a well-known post with a warning to see whether the change worked.

X search has a separate Safe Search feature. Even when you are allowed to view sensitive media normally, such posts can still be filtered out of search results.

Open a search on x.com. Go to the search settings and look for Hide sensitive content. Turn this filter off. X also has a filter for muted and blocked accounts. Keep that option on when you do not want to see those accounts.

On Android, the search setting may be available in the extra menu within search results. On iPhone, X recommends changing the setting through x.com. After that, the choice should also apply to searches in the mobile apps.

It may take a few minutes before you see the change. After that, use both Top and Latest. Top shows selected relevant results. Latest shows results in more time order. X rules and other access limits still apply there too.

Which two settings should you check?

Setting What is it for? When should you change it? What does not change?
Display media that may contain sensitive content Warnings and sensitive media in normal views If you want to be able to open such media on purpose Banned content and age-restricted content do not automatically become accessible
Hide sensitive content in search Filter for search results If sensitive posts should also appear in X search Blocked accounts and other filters can still remain active separately
Mark media you post as sensitive Warns others about your media If you regularly post allowed sensitive media yourself It does not change what you see from others

First check which problem you are trying to solve. For “I want to view sensitive posts,” you need the first two settings. For “I want to correctly label my own media,” use the third setting.

What changes after you enable sensitive content?

X may show more posts and media directly or after a confirmation. Search results may also become broader when you turn off the separate safe-search filter.

This does not make your account public. The setting does not change who can see your own posts. A protected account stays protected.

The change also does not give extra permission to post banned content. X can still remove, limit, or place content behind a warning according to the rules.

You may suddenly see images that feel upsetting or shocking. Only turn this on if you really want to. You can still mute, block, or report individual accounts.

Want to control your own visibility? Read how to delete all tweets: what are your options? That is a different setting from viewing sensitive media.

Why do you still see a warning?

Turning on sensitive content does not mean every warning disappears. X may still show a confirmation screen before you open certain media. That gives you one more chance to decide whether you really want to view it.

The following factors can also play a role:

  • your age is below the required limit;
  • there is no birth date in your profile;
  • the post is subject to a local legal restriction;
  • the account is protected and you are not an approved follower;
  • the author has blocked you;
  • the post has been deleted;
  • the media falls under a stricter X rule;
  • your changed setting has not been processed yet;
  • you have not adjusted the separate search filter.

Always read the warning text. It often tells you whether you can continue or why the content is not available.

What role do age and birth date play?

X can restrict some forms of sensitive media for people under 18. Accounts without a birth date can also receive age limits for certain content.

Do not add a false birth date to get around a restriction. Your account details must be correct. Also check the privacy setting for your birth date before adding or changing it.

The general sensitive-content switch does not override age rules. Seeing a message that is clearly about your age? Then follow X’s official explanation. Repeatedly switching the media option on and off will not help in that case.

Available settings can also differ for accounts registered as minors.

How do you mark the media you post as sensitive?

This is a different task from viewing sensitive content from others. Do you regularly post allowed sensitive media? Then open Settings and privacy, Privacy and safety, and Your posts. There, turn on the option to mark media you post as possibly sensitive.

For one photo or video, you can add a content warning while composing a post. X uses categories such as nudity, violence, and sensitive. Use the flag or edit option on the attached media when it is available.

Mark content honestly. If you repeatedly fail to mark sensitive media correctly, X may change the setting for your account. Existing media that X has already labeled will not automatically lose that label when you later change a setting.

A label does not make banned content allowed. Always check X’s current rules, especially for violence, sexual content, privacy, and material that was made or shared without consent.

Can sensitive content affect your reach?

Possibly sensitive content may be less visible to people who do not want to open warnings or who use safe-search filters. X can also keep some sensitive content out of certain recommendations or search results.

That does not mean every low view count is caused by this setting. Timing, topic, your account privacy, relevance, and the overall quality of the post also matter.

First check whether the post is visible on your profile and through the direct URL. Then look at the warning and your search settings. Do not draw conclusions from one search only.

When normal posts are missing too, use the broader troubleshooting guide Why aren’t my X Twitter messages showing up?.

Want to build more presence on X alongside good settings? Then at SocialKings you can buy Twitter followers in a targeted way. For extra social proof on individual posts, you can also buy Twitter likes. This does not change warnings, search filters, or content rules. So make sure your account and posts are set up correctly first.

Why is the switch missing in your settings?

The most common reason is that you are using the iPhone app. In that case, log in through a browser on x.com. Other possible causes are:

  • you are using an old version of the app;
  • you are signed in to a different account;
  • your account has an age restriction;
  • menu labels changed after an update;
  • you are looking under Your posts instead of Content you see;
  • a temporary app error is preventing the menu from loading;
  • the setting is available differently in your region.

Update the app and then check the setting in a browser. Do not use unknown browser extensions that claim to remove all restrictions. Such extensions can steal your account details.

Do not create a new account just to find this switch. That usually does not solve the real cause.

How do you test whether the change works?

Use a post that you know X marks as possibly sensitive. First open the post through x.com. Then check the same direct URL in the X app.

Next, test the search function:

  1. Search for a neutral term that makes the known post easy to find.
  2. Open Search settings.
  3. Check that Hide sensitive content is turned off.
  4. View both Top and Latest.
  5. Wait a few minutes if you just changed the setting.

Works on the website but not in the app? Close the app completely and open it again. Also check that you are using the same account in both places.

Does it not work anywhere? Then read the warning. It may involve your age, account protection, a block, deletion, or a rule you cannot change with the general media option.

How do you turn sensitive content off again later?

Go back to Settings and privacy, Privacy and safety, and Content you see. Turn off the option for showing potentially sensitive media.

Also open the search settings and turn Hide sensitive content back on. That limits both the normal display of sensitive media and its visibility in search results.

Previously viewed media will not be removed from your memory or from any screenshots you made. Also check downloaded files on your device if you do not want to keep them.

You can also mute or block specific accounts. That is useful when you only want to stop seeing content from a few sources.

How do you keep control over what you see on X?

The sensitive-content setting is only one part. Use mute for words, accounts, or topics you do not want to see. Block accounts that should not be able to interact with you. Report content that you believe breaks X rules.

A report does not remove a post automatically. X reviews the report first. So use reporting for possible violations, not just because you are not interested in a topic.

Adjust your timeline of followed accounts and your recommendations on purpose. Indicate which posts you want to see less often. Also review your privacy and safety settings regularly.

Want to understand which interests others can still see on an account? Then read what is still visible with X Twitter likes.

What mistakes should you avoid?

Avoid these common mistakes:

  • changing only the setting for your own posts;
  • forgetting to turn off the safe-search filter;
  • on an iPhone, only searching in the app;
  • entering an incorrect birth date;
  • expecting every warning to disappear;
  • giving an unknown app access to your X account;
  • confusing banned content with allowed sensitive content;
  • accidentally changing the privacy of your own posts;
  • testing from the wrong account.

Preferably change one setting at a time and then test again. That way you know exactly which change has an effect.

Frequently asked questions about sensitive content on X

Why do I not see the setting on my iPhone?

The option sometimes does not appear in the iOS app. Log in through x.com in Safari and go to Privacy and safety and Content you see.

Do I also need to turn off Hide sensitive content?

Yes, if you also want to see sensitive posts in X search. The general media option and the safe-search filter are separate settings.

Does this change make my own account public?

No. The setting mainly controls which media you see. The protection and visibility of your own posts do not change automatically.

Why is some content still blocked?

Your age, a missing birth date, local rules, account protection, a block, or deletion of a post can continue to limit access.

Can I turn the setting back later?

Yes. Turn off the media option and turn Hide sensitive content back on in the search settings.

Is sensitive content the same as banned content?

No. Some sensitive media may be posted with a warning. Content that breaks X rules can be limited or removed. Your personal viewing setting does not change that.

Which steps can you take right now?

Log in to x.com and open Privacy and safety. Under Content you see, turn on the media option. Then open the search settings and turn off Hide sensitive content if you also want to view broader search results.

Wait a few minutes and test one known post on the website and in the app. Read every warning that still appears carefully. Do not try to bypass age rules, blocks, local restrictions, or deletions.

That gives you more control over what you see on X, without changing other privacy settings unnecessarily.
