Disable blue check marks on WhatsApp
You can turn off blue check marks on WhatsApp through Settings, Privacy, and Read Receipts. Switch Read Receipts off. In private chats, other people will then no longer see whether you have read a regular message. You will also no longer see whether they have read your message.
There are a few important exceptions. Read receipts still work in group chats. Voice message play receipts also work differently. The setting also affects the viewer list for WhatsApp Status. Below, you can read exactly what changes before you switch it off.
How do you turn off blue check marks on WhatsApp?
On an iPhone, open WhatsApp and tap Settings in the bottom right. Choose Privacy. Find Read Receipts and switch it off.
On Android, open WhatsApp and tap the three dots in the top right. Choose Settings and then Privacy. Next, turn off Read Receipts.
- Open the official WhatsApp app.
- Go to Settings.
- Open Privacy.
- Find the Read Receipts setting.
- Switch it off.
- Check the result with a normal text message in a private test chat.
The change applies to your entire WhatsApp account. So you do not need to turn off Read Receipts separately for every private chat. WhatsApp does not offer a standard option to disable blue check marks for only one chosen contact.
Want to see the check marks again later? Follow the same path and turn Read Receipts back on. You will only see other people’s read receipts when your own setting is active and the other person also uses Read Receipts.
What changes right after you turn off Read Receipts?
When you open new regular messages in private chats, the sender does not get a blue read receipt. The two gray check marks may stay visible. They show that the message was delivered. You will also no longer see blue check marks on your sent messages when this setting applies.
Your chat history, contacts, and messages stay exactly as they are. WhatsApp does not delete anything. The setting does not block anyone and it does not stop notifications. You can still open, reply to, forward, and save messages.
WhatsApp does not show in your profile that you have turned off Read Receipts. Contacts can only notice that regular messages no longer turn blue. They cannot see exactly when you changed the setting.
Group chats are the main exception. There, you can still view read details through message info. Voice message playback can also be visible. So test the setting with a normal text message in a one-to-one chat.
When is turning off blue check marks a good choice?
The setting can be useful when blue check marks create pressure. You get more room to read a message and reply calmly later. This can help during busy workdays, when handling many customer questions, or in personal conversations that need extra attention.
There is also a downside. You lose the same information about messages you send to others. For an important appointment, you will not know from blue check marks whether the recipient has read your message. In that situation, ask for a short confirmation.
For families, teams, and customer service, clarity can matter more than extra privacy. So talk about what you expect from a read receipt. A blue check mark only means WhatsApp has marked the message as read. It is never a promise that someone will reply immediately.
What do one gray, two gray, and two blue check marks mean?
The check marks show different steps. One gray check mark means your message has been sent. Two gray check marks normally mean the message has been delivered to the recipient’s device. Two blue check marks mean that WhatsApp has received a read receipt in a private chat.
Two gray check marks do not prove that someone is ignoring you. The person may not have opened the conversation yet. It is also possible that Read Receipts are turned off. A real reply usually gives more clarity than the color of an icon.
| Type of activity | Can the other person see this? | Important exception |
|---|---|---|
| Regular text message read | No, if Read Receipts are off | This applies to private chats |
| Photo or video opened in a private chat | Normally no blue read receipt | View once media has its own rules |
| Message read in a group | Yes | Read receipts for groups stay available |
| Voice message played | Yes | Play receipts still work |
| WhatsApp Status viewed | Normally not | You also lose your own viewer list |
| Online or last seen | This depends on a separate setting | Read Receipts do not change this |
| Message received | Yes, via gray check marks | Delivery is not the same as reading |
What can another person exactly see on WhatsApp?
After turning off Read Receipts, a contact can still see that a message was sent and delivered. The check marks usually stay gray. The setting only hides the normal proof that you have read a message in a private chat.
Of course, the person can still see your reply. They may also be able to see your online status, last seen, profile photo, info, and Status. Each of these has its own privacy settings. Turning off blue check marks does not change those settings automatically.
In a group chat, participants can open message info. There, they can see who received and read the message. The Read Receipts setting does not turn that behavior off.
When you play a voice message, the sender may receive a play receipt. So do not play a voice message if you want to avoid letting the sender know that you listened to it.
What can another person not see on WhatsApp?
In a private chat, the sender will not see the normal blue read receipt for regular messages when you have turned off Read Receipts. The person also does not get a notification saying that you changed this privacy setting.
The sender cannot tell for sure why the check marks remain gray. Maybe you have not opened the message yet. Maybe your Read Receipts are off. The check marks also do not say anything about your reason for not replying.
Blue check marks also do not prove that someone has carefully read every word. They only show that WhatsApp processed a read receipt. Opening a chat is not the same as attention, understanding, or interest.
The feature also does not show how many times you reopen a normal message. WhatsApp does not give a contact a counter for how often you have opened a message or conversation.
Does Read Receipts also hide your online status and typing indicator?
No. Read Receipts, Last Seen, and Online are separate settings. If you only turn off Read Receipts, someone may still be able to see when you are online. Open Settings and Privacy to choose the audience for Last Seen and Online separately.
The notice that you are typing or recording a voice message also does not fall under the blue check mark switch. In the regular app, WhatsApp does not offer a general button to fully turn off these temporary signals.
Want to be less visible? Check all relevant settings. Look at Read Receipts, Last Seen and Online, profile photo, info, Status, and groups. One switch does not make your account fully private.
Which exceptions are important for WhatsApp?
Group chats keep read receipts
You cannot turn off read receipts for group chats with the normal switch. Press and hold your own sent group message and open Info to see who received and read the message. In a large group, the two check marks only turn blue when all participants have read the message.
Voice messages use play receipts
For voice messages, WhatsApp uses a receipt that shows the message has been played. This remains an important exception when regular Read Receipts are off. Simply opening the chat is not the same as playing the voice message.
WhatsApp Status uses the same privacy choice
When Read Receipts are off, contacts normally do not see that you viewed their Status. You also cannot see who viewed your own Status. This works both ways, just like regular read receipts.
A screenshot of a Status is a different topic. Read the separate explanation of whether someone can see that you take a WhatsApp Status screenshot.
View once has its own protection
Photos and videos set to view once are temporary media. WhatsApp uses separate signals and protections for that. So the normal blue check mark setting does not tell the whole story for this type of message.
WhatsApp Business can be used differently
In the regular WhatsApp Business app, the privacy setting is in a similar place. Companies that use official business systems can use delivery and read data for their service. Your own app setting still matters, but a business chat may include extra labels or automatic messages.
Do you manage a public WhatsApp channel yourself? Then channel updates are separate from personal read receipts. For greater visible reach, you can also buy WhatsApp channel members. Do not use this as a replacement for clear, useful updates and a good privacy choice.
Why do you sometimes not see blue check marks?
No blue check marks do not automatically mean you have been blocked. There can be several causes:
- You or the recipient has turned off Read Receipts.
- The recipient has not opened the chat yet.
- The recipient’s phone is temporarily offline.
- WhatsApp is still syncing with a linked device.
- The message type is not a normal read receipt.
Does a message stay on one gray check mark? Then it has probably not been delivered yet. That can happen because the phone is off, the connection is poor, or for another reason. One check mark alone does not prove a block. Look at several signs in the guide about how do you know if someone has blocked you on WhatsApp.
Why do some apps still promise extra insight?
Some apps claim they can show blue check marks, online status, or Status viewers when the official privacy setting hides that information. Such a promise is not reliable. The app may store public changes or make estimates. That is not the same as real access to WhatsApp read receipts.
Do not install a modified version of WhatsApp to bypass another person’s privacy settings. Also never give your verification code or backup to an unknown service. That can cause you to lose access to your account and messages.
A service that secretly tracks when contacts are online may also violate their privacy. Use the official WhatsApp app and respect another person’s choice to turn off Read Receipts.
WhatsApp chats and calls are protected by default with end-to-end encryption between the participants. That means an external app cannot simply access the content. An app that still promises full insight often asks for dangerous permissions or login details.
How do you make your WhatsApp account more private?
On an iPhone or Android phone, open Settings and then Privacy. At the top, you will often see Privacy Checkup. WhatsApp uses this checkup to guide you through important choices. Review each step and choose what fits your contacts and usage.
- Turn off Read Receipts if you want less pressure to reply quickly.
- Limit Last Seen and Online to your contacts or to nobody.
- Choose who can see your profile photo and info.
- Set who you share each Status update with.
- Limit who can add you to groups without permission.
- Mute calls from unknown numbers.
- Use two-step verification and add a safe email address.
- Regularly check which devices are linked to your account.
Privacy is not only about reading messages. An old message can still remain in the chat for both people. Want to truly retract a message you sent? Read how to delete a WhatsApp message for everyone.
Can you turn off blue check marks for one person?
No, WhatsApp does not offer a setting in the regular app that lets you turn off Read Receipts for only one contact. The switch applies to all private chats. Group chats and voice messages keep their own exceptions.
You can block a specific contact, but that is a much bigger step. Blocking stops normal communication and is not meant as a simple blue check mark setting. Only choose this option when you really do not want contact anymore.
Do you just want to reply later? Leave the message unread or mute notifications for that chat. That will not change the blue check marks after you have opened the conversation, but it can give you more peace of mind.
How do you check whether Read Receipts are disabled?
Open Settings and Privacy. Then check the switch for Read Receipts. A switched-off toggle is the most reliable check. Do not rely on just one chat, because the other person may have turned the feature off too.
You can then test with a normal text message from someone you trust. Open the received message and ask whether the check marks stayed gray. Do not test in a group and do not use a voice message, because different rules apply there.
Do you not see the setting? Update WhatsApp through your phone’s official app store and open Privacy again. Do not use an unknown installation file to add the option.
Which two screenshots explain blue check marks clearly?
First, use an annotated screenshot of Settings, Privacy, and the Read Receipts switch. Mark only the path and the button. Then use an image of message info in a group chat. Mark the Read by and Delivered to sections there.
Make names, phone numbers, profile photos, and message content fully unreadable. If you create the images yourself for this explanation, use a test chat if possible.
Frequently asked questions about turning off blue check marks on WhatsApp
Who can see that I have turned off Read Receipts?
WhatsApp does not send a notification about this. A contact may suspect it when messages stay gray while you still reply. However, that is not a separate confirmation of your setting.
Does turning off blue check marks work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. On both systems, Read Receipts are under Settings and Privacy. On Android, you usually open Settings through the three dots in the top right. On an iPhone, Settings is in the bottom right.
Can I still see whether others read my message?
No, with regular private chats the choice works both ways. If you turn off Read Receipts, you also no longer see other people’s blue read receipts. Group chats and play receipts follow their own rules.
Do blue check marks stay visible in WhatsApp groups?
Yes. The normal privacy switch does not turn off read receipts in group chats. Through the info for a sent message, group members can see who received and read the message.
Can someone see that I listened to a voice message?
Yes. WhatsApp uses a play receipt for voice messages. This is an important exception to the setting for normal blue read receipts.
Are apps that show hidden read receipts reliable?
No. An external app cannot reliably override another person’s official privacy choice for you. Do not share your verification code, password, backup, or access to your WhatsApp account.
Are old messages deleted when I turn off Read Receipts?
No. Your chat history and messages stay in place. The setting only changes which read information WhatsApp shows for regular messages in private chats.
Can someone tell from gray check marks that I do not want to reply?
No. Gray check marks do not say anything about your reason for not replying. The person does not know for sure whether you opened the message, are busy, or have turned off Read Receipts.
Which privacy setting should you check now on WhatsApp?
Open Settings and Privacy and look at Read Receipts first. Turn the feature off if you do not want blue check marks in private chats. Keep in mind that you will then also no longer see other people’s blue check marks.
Check Last Seen and Online right after that. Many people turn off blue check marks but still leave their online presence visible to everyone. Finally, go through the Privacy Checkup. That way, you make a deliberate choice for messages, Status, groups, calls, and your profile.
