Hide your online status on Discord
You hide your online status on Discord by setting your user status to Invisible. Other users will then see you as offline. You can still use Discord normally. You can open servers, read messages, and send friends a message.
Invisible does not make everything you do secret. A new message, a reaction, or your presence in a voice channel can still show that you are active. Profile details and shared activity also have their own privacy settings. Below, you will learn step by step what others can and cannot see.

How do you hide your online status on Discord?
On a computer, click your profile picture in the bottom left. Then choose Invisible. The colored dot next to your profile turns gray. To other users, you now look the same as someone who is truly offline.
On iPhone and Android, open Discord and tap your profile picture in the bottom right. Then tap your current status and choose Invisible. The exact location of the button may change slightly after an update. The option is always found under your user status.
The setting stays active until you choose another status yourself. So you do not need to turn Invisible on again every time you open Discord. After a major app update, do check whether your chosen status is still correct.
- Open Discord on your phone or computer.
- Open the menu next to your profile picture.
- Tap or click your current user status.
- Choose Invisible.
- Check whether your status is shown as gray or offline.
Do not use Do Not Disturb if you want to appear invisible. With Do Not Disturb, other people see a red dot. On a computer, this mode mainly silences notifications. Only Invisible hides your regular online presence.
What is the difference between Online, Away, Do Not Disturb, and Invisible?
Discord has four standard status options. Online shows a green dot. This is the clearest choice if you want friends to know you are available. Away shows a yellow dot. Discord may use this status automatically when you have not been active for a while. You can also choose Away manually.
Do Not Disturb shows a red dot. That means other users can still see that you are not offline. On a computer, this option also silences notifications you would normally receive. Use this mode when you want to focus, but do not mind that others can still see your status.
Invisible shows you as offline. You still keep access to all normal Discord features. This option is useful when you want to read messages without the friends list or member list immediately showing that you came online.
- Choose Online when you are open to direct contact.
- Choose Away when you cannot respond all the time.
- Choose Do Not Disturb when notifications interrupt your work or rest.
- Choose Invisible when your regular online status should stay hidden.
A custom status is different from your user status. In a custom status, you can add text and an emoji. Depending on your profile privacy, that text may still be visible while you are Invisible. Remove your custom status or limit your profile if the text reveals what you are doing.
Does Invisible change your notifications or availability?
No. Invisible mainly changes what others see next to your online status. You will still receive messages and notifications according to your normal settings. A friend can still send you a direct message. A server can also mention you if you have access to that server and the relevant channel.
If you really want peace and quiet, adjust your notifications too. You can mute an entire server or a single channel. You can also use Do Not Disturb. Just remember that Do Not Disturb makes your status visibly red again. Want to look offline and still get fewer notifications? Then choose Invisible and turn off the notifications you want separately.
Invisible also does not prevent friend requests. Profile privacy does not control those requests either. Check Content and Social if you want to decide who can contact you. That way, you combine status privacy with more control over new contact.
What can someone else see on Discord?
Discord uses different signals to show activity information. Your normal online status is only one of them. Someone cannot tell from the gray dot whether you are really away. In some cases, they can still notice in other ways that you are using Discord.
| Type of activity | Can the other person see it? | Important exception |
|---|---|---|
| Your online dot | No, you appear offline | You must have chosen Invisible |
| A new message | Yes | The timestamp shows when you wrote it |
| A reaction or emoji | Yes | The reaction is visible on the message |
| Presence in a voice channel | Yes | Members with access to that channel can see you |
| Mobile presence | No | Invisible also hides the mobile icon |
| Shared game or music | Sometimes | This depends on Activity Sharing and your connections |
| Custom status and bio | Sometimes | This depends on your profile privacy |
| Old messages and server membership | Yes | Invisible does not remove existing information |
When you send a message, recipients of course see that the message was just posted. Invisible does not stop that. The setting only makes Discord show your normal online status as offline.
What can someone else not see on Discord?
Another user cannot see that you deliberately chose Invisible. Discord does not show a special sign or notification for this. The gray status looks the same as the status of someone who is simply not using Discord at that moment.
Others also cannot see when you are only reading a text channel. Discord does not have a general list of people who are viewing a text channel. Even server admins do not get a button that lets them bypass your hidden online status.
Someone cannot reliably tell how long you have been online. A bot or website can only save public signals. If you are Invisible and you are not doing anything public, that service has no proof that you are active at that moment.
Invisible does not send a warning to friends. The setting also does not change your friendships, roles, or permissions. You remain in the same servers and can open the same channels as before.
Can server admins still see that you are online?
No, a server admin sees the same offline status in the normal member list as other members do. The admin role does not give a special button to turn off Invisible or view your real user status.
Admins can still see public actions tied to their server. If you post a message, add a reaction, or open a voice channel, that action remains visible. Some server logs also store changes and events related to moderation. Such a log is not a hidden list of online users.
So do not assume that Invisible makes all your behavior anonymous. It hides one clear signal: your regular online status. Use server permissions, profile privacy, and careful communication to limit the rest of your visibility.
What exceptions are important for your Discord privacy?
Messages and reactions remain visible
If you write a message while you are Invisible, everyone with access to that channel can see it. The timestamp can make it clear that you were active just then. The same applies to reactions, new conversations, new threads, and visible changes to your profile.
Voice channels show present members
If you join a voice channel, your name appears in that channel. Invisible does not hide this. That is necessary so other participants know who can listen and speak. Do you not want to be visible in the voice channel? Then leave or close the channel.
Activity Sharing is a separate setting
Discord can show games, Spotify, and other supported activities. In Discord’s current settings, this is called Activity Sharing. You can turn this feature off globally. You can also decide whether friends or members of certain servers may see your activity.
On a computer, go to User Settings and then to Activity Sharing. Turn off Share My Activity if nobody should see this information. Also check under Connections whether Spotify, Xbox, PlayStation, or another linked service may be shown as a status.
Profile privacy is separate from your online status
With Profile Privacy, you decide who can see your full profile. Discord includes your custom status, bio, badges, pronouns, connections, and activity in this area. For example, you can share your full profile only with friends.
This choice is separate from Invisible and Activity Sharing. Discord may offer to change both privacy settings at once. Read that message carefully before you make a choice. You can also manage the settings separately.
Moderators still keep necessary server information
A moderator does not automatically get access to your restricted profile data. The moderator will still see information needed to manage a server. Think of your username, visible name, account age, and shared servers. Your server roles and messages also remain available.
Does Invisible work the same for a private and public account?
Yes, Invisible works the same way for every normal Discord account. Discord does not have the same simple public-versus-private account choice that some other social platforms offer. Your privacy is made up of several separate settings.
It does not matter for Invisible whether you have few friends or are part of many public servers. People will see your regular status as offline. What they can see beyond that depends on your friendship, shared servers, channel permissions, Profile Privacy, and Activity Sharing.
Do you use Discord for your own community? Invisible does not change the visibility or setup of your server. Good channels, clear roles, and proper permissions remain important. The complete beginner’s guide to creating a Discord server can help you review the basics at your own pace.
If you want to grow your community afterward, you can also buy Discord server members. At the same time, always focus on valuable conversations and an active atmosphere, so new members have a reason to stay.
Why do some apps still claim to show more?
Some websites, bots, and modified apps say they can find hidden Discord users. These services often use old public signals. For example, they may remember when someone last had a visible status or when that person posted a public message. That is not proof of the current online status.
Never give your password, account token, or verification code to such a service. An account token gives broad access to your account. Discord advises against using unofficial programs and modifications to the app. These tools can reduce your account security.
Also do not install an unknown browser extension that claims to bypass Invisible. Such an extension may be able to read your session data, messages, or visited websites. The limited promise of extra insight is not worth that risk.
A normal server bot can only use information that Discord makes available through approved features. The bot does not receive a secret list of people who chose Invisible.
How do you make your Discord account more private?
Invisible is a good first step, but check your other settings too. On a phone, open your profile and tap the gear icon. Then look under Data and Privacy, Profile Privacy, Activity Sharing, and Content and Social. The exact names may vary slightly by Discord version.
- Set your user status to Invisible.
- Limit your full profile to friends if that suits you.
- Turn off Activity Sharing globally or limit it to friends.
- Check each linked account to see whether its activity is shown as a status.
- Decide who may send you friend requests.
- Limit direct messages from unknown server members.
- Remove old custom statuses and unnecessary connections.
- Use two-factor authentication for better account security.
Test your settings with a trusted friend. Ask that person to open your profile and tell you what is visible. You never need to share your password, verification code, or other login details for this.
Can you no longer open a server afterward? That is usually not caused by Invisible. In that case, check why a Discord invite may be invalid.
How do you check whether Invisible really works?
Choose Invisible and ask a friend to look at your name in the friends list or member list. The friend should see a gray offline status. Do not send a message or post a reaction during this test. That would still show that you are active.
You can also use a second test account of your own, as long as you follow Discord’s normal rules. From that account, look at your main profile. Check the user status, custom status, bio, and shared activity separately. That way, you can see exactly which privacy setting still needs attention.
Still seeing a green dot? Then fully close Discord and reopen the app. After that, choose Invisible again. Also check whether you are logged in on another device with the same account. The manual choice should apply to your entire account.
Which two screenshots make this setting clear?
For the first image, use a clear screenshot of the status menu. Mark the Invisible option and also show Online, Away, and Do Not Disturb. That way, the difference between the four modes becomes clear right away.
For the second image, show User Settings and Activity Sharing. Highlight the switch that turns off activity sharing for others. This shows that online status and shared activity are two separate settings.
Make usernames, server names, profile pictures, and private messages unreadable. A privacy guide should not expose new personal information.
Frequently asked questions about hiding your online status on Discord
Who can see that I am Invisible on Discord?
No one gets a notification that you chose Invisible. Other users see the same gray status as they would for someone who is truly offline. A recent message, a reaction, or your presence in a voice channel can still show that you are active.
Does Invisible apply to friends and server members?
Yes. Your regular online status is hidden from friends and server members. Other profile details may still be visible. This depends on your Profile Privacy, activity settings, and the relationship you have with that person.
Does Invisible work the same on iPhone and Android?
Yes. On both mobile systems, you choose Invisible through your profile and current user status. The position of a button may change after an update, but the result is the same.
Can you send messages while appearing offline?
Yes. You can use Discord normally while you are Invisible. The recipient will see the new message and will therefore know that you had access to Discord at that moment.
Can server admins see my real status?
No. A server admin sees the same gray offline status as other users. An admin can still see your visible messages, reactions, server roles, and presence in an accessible voice channel.
Are apps that show hidden Discord users reliable?
No, that promise is not reliable. A service may collect public activity, but it does not automatically see your real hidden status. Never share your account token, password, or verification code.
Does Discord Nitro affect your hidden status?
No. Nitro adds extra features, but it does not give others access to your real status. Read more about what Discord Nitro is and whether it is worth it.
Which privacy setting should you check on Discord next?
First set your status to Invisible. Then open Activity Sharing and check whether games, music, and linked accounts are still visible. This is the setting many users forget.
Do you also want to limit your bio, custom status, and connections? Then open Profile Privacy and choose the audience that fits you best. Invisible, Activity Sharing, and Profile Privacy together give you much more control than the gray status dot alone.
