Restore an archived Instagram post

You can restore an archived Instagram post by going to Archive and then Posts archive in the mobile Instagram app. Open the correct post, tap the three dots, and choose Show on profile. After that, the photo, video, or carousel will appear back in the same place on your profile.

So you do not need to upload the post again. In normal use, the original caption, likes, and comments are kept. The old publish date also stays in place. That means a restored post usually does not jump to the top of your profile.

On an iPhone, it works through the same path: first your profile, then the archive. After an update, the buttons may have slightly different names or be in a different place, but the feature is usually still easy to recognize.

Where do you find archived Instagram posts?

Archived feed posts are found in the Posts archive. Instagram has several types of archives. Because of that, you may first land in old Stories. That does not mean your photo or video is gone.

Use this path to open the correct archive:

1. Open Instagram.
2. Check at the top that you are on the right account.
3. Tap your profile picture in the bottom right.

6. At the top, tap the name of the archive that is open.

The Story archive contains Stories where archiving was turned on. The Posts archive contains feed posts that you hid yourself. Drafts, saved posts, and deleted posts are stored elsewhere.

Why is an old post not at the top of the archive?

Instagram can show archived posts by date. An old post may therefore be further down the list. Do you remember roughly which month or year you posted it? Then look in that period.

Use filters if Instagram shows them in your version of the app. Do you not see any normal feed posts at all? Then check the name at the top again. Many users accidentally end up in the Story archive.

What is not an archived post?

A saved post is not an archived post. If you save someone else’s post, you only keep a reference to that publication. The original creator still owns it and can change or delete the post.

A draft is also different. It has not been published yet and may be stored locally on your device. If you delete the app or clear your data, such a draft can disappear.

A deleted post is sometimes temporarily in Recently Deleted. You need to restore it there, not via the Posts archive.

What should you check before restoring the post?

First, look closely at the archived post before making it visible again. Old information may no longer be correct. Think of prices, opening hours, promotions, locations, or people mentioned in the post.

Go through this checklist:

1. Are you logged in to the correct Instagram account?
2. Have you opened the Posts archive and not the Story archive?
3. Is this the right photo, video, or carousel?
4. Do you want to make the post visible again for your current audience?
5. Does the caption still fit your brand, business, or personal situation?
6. Are any mentioned prices, dates, or promotions still correct?
7. Do all links and referenced pages still work?
8. Are there people, tags, or locations you no longer want to show?

You can view an archived post before restoring it. Use that moment to check the caption, tags, and existing comments. You cannot change everything from the archive. Sometimes you first need to show the post on your profile again and then edit it through Edit.

What happens to a carousel?

With a carousel, the whole post returns. The images and videos are not re-posted as separate posts. The original order inside the carousel normally stays the same too.

What changes with a Collab post?

A Collab post is linked to multiple creators. Archiving or restoring it can therefore affect how the shared post appears on different profiles.

First, discuss it with the other creator. After restoring, check both profiles, the caption, and the visible contributors. Instagram may change the controls and notifications in updates.

Where does a restored Instagram post appear?

A restored Instagram post normally appears in its original spot in your profile grid. Instagram does not treat restoring as a completely new upload. The old publish date determines where the post is placed.

Did you publish the post in 2022, for example? Then it will usually appear among your other posts from 2022. If you have posted a lot of new content since then, you may need to scroll quite far down.

That is one of the main reasons people think restoration did not work. So check the correct time period first before tapping buttons again or trying to restore the post a second time.

Does a restored post appear again in followers’ feeds?

Do not assume a restored post gets the same reach as a new publication. The post keeps its old date and its old place on your profile. Instagram also does not promise that every follower will see it again in their feed.

The safe expectation is that you are making old content visible on your profile again. Do you want to bring the same message actively to attention again? Then create a new and current post. You can still use the old post as inspiration.

Can likes or comments display differently?

Loading interactions may take some time. A slow internet connection or a temporary sync issue can make it seem like not everything appears right away. Refresh the post and check again later.

Settings can also affect what you or a visitor sees. The like count may be hidden, for example. That does not automatically mean all likes are gone.

What is the difference between Archive and Recently Deleted?

Archive and Recently Deleted are two different sections. An archived post is only hidden. A deleted post is temporarily in a recovery folder and may disappear permanently after a certain time.

Instagram explains that deleted profile content normally stays in Recently Deleted for 30 days. After that, it is deleted automatically. For a Story that is not in the Story archive, a shorter period may apply.

How do you restore a deleted Instagram post?

Is the post in Recently Deleted? Then do not use the route through the Posts archive. Instead, follow these steps:

1. Open Instagram and go to your profile.
2. Open the menu with the three lines.
3. Go to Your activity.
4. Choose Recently Deleted.
5. Open the post you want to restore.
6. Tap the three dots.
7. Choose Restore.
8. If needed, confirm your identity.

Do this before the recovery period ends. After permanent deletion, you may no longer be able to bring the post back through Instagram.

Is archiving safer than deleting?

Archiving is more useful if you are not sure whether you will need a post later. The post disappears from your public profile, but remains available in your private archive. You can make it visible again later without uploading it again.

Deleting is meant for content you really want to remove. You usually still have a limited recovery period, but after that the post may disappear permanently. So if you are unsure, archive first.

Why can’t you restore an archived post?

Sometimes restoring an archived Instagram post does not work because you are in the wrong archive, on another account, using an outdated app, or dealing with a temporary sync issue. Check the possible causes one by one.

Are you logged in to the right account?

Check your username before searching the archive. A personal account, creator account, and business account each have their own archive. Content does not move along automatically when you switch accounts.

Do you no longer remember which account the post was on? Then check old notifications, screenshots, or shared links. That may help you find the username used for the post.

Are you looking in Posts archive or Story archive?

Open the drop-down menu at the top of the archive and select Posts archive. Old feed posts are not stored with archived Stories. That is the most common reason someone cannot find a post.

Could the post be in Recently Deleted?

Check Your activity and then Recently Deleted. If the post is there, you deleted it instead of archiving it. In that case, use the Restore button.

Is Instagram updated?

Update the Instagram app through your phone’s app store. Also check whether your device’s operating system is up to date. Then fully close Instagram and restart your phone.

After an update, buttons may be in a slightly different place. So look mainly for the terms Archive, Posts archive, and Show on profile.

Is your internet connection stable?

Test both Wi-Fi and mobile data. A weak connection can stop the archive from loading properly or delay the change from appearing.

Do not keep tapping the same button again and again. Wait a little, refresh your profile, and open the archive again. That helps avoid confusion caused by several attempts in a row.

Did Instagram remove the post?

A post removed by Instagram for rule violations is not always simply waiting as an archived post. Check your Account Status. There you can see removed content, warnings, and possible restrictions.

In some cases, you can request a review. Follow the steps shown by Instagram in your Account Status.

Why do you not see Show on profile?

First check whether you really opened your own feed post in the Posts archive. The option is not in the same place for every type of content. Update the app and try it on a phone or tablet.

Also check that you are not viewing the post through Saved, a chat, a draft, or Recently Deleted. Only your own archived post has the normal option to show it on your profile again.

What if nothing works?

Take screenshots of the archive, the relevant post, and any error message. Also note the device type, your operating system version, and the Instagram version.

Then go to Settings and activity, choose Help, and then Report a problem. Explain clearly what you have already tried. Never share your password in a report or chat.

Can you undo the restoration?

Yes. Open the restored post on your profile, tap the three dots, and choose Archive. The post will be hidden again and sent back to your private archive.
