Delete YouTube search history
You can clear your YouTube search history through Settings and Manage all history. From there, you can delete one search, choose a time range, or erase all saved YouTube activity. Please note: if you choose Delete for a time period, YouTube also removes your watch history from that same period.
Deleted searches will no longer appear as personal suggestions. YouTube also stops using them for recommendations. This action is not something you can simply undo.

What is your YouTube search history?
Your YouTube search history is made up of the searches that YouTube links to your signed-in Google account. YouTube uses that data to show previous searches and make your experience more personal.

Deleting searches does not make your account fully anonymous. Other data can still remain. Think of browser history, local app data, and activity outside YouTube.
What happens to your recommendations?
YouTube says deleted searches are no longer used for recommendations. Your home page may therefore change. How big that change is also depends on your watch history, subscriptions, likes, and other signals.
So do not expect a completely new home page if you only remove one search term. YouTube uses much more information to decide which videos you see.
Where can you find your YouTube search history?
In the YouTube mobile app, you can find your search history by following this route:
- Open YouTube and sign in.
- Tap your profile photo.
- Tap Settings.
- Choose Manage all history.
- Use delete, search, or the calendar.
On a computer, go to Google’s My Activity page. Open your YouTube history there. After that, you can remove one activity, a selected time period, or all saved activity.

How do you delete one search on YouTube?
Do you not want to clear everything? Then delete only the incorrect, old, or sensitive search term. This is usually the safest choice, because you keep your other searches and watched videos.
On Android, iPhone, or iPad
- Open the YouTube app.
- Tap your profile photo.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Manage all history.
- Find the search in question.
- Tap the X next to the activity.
- Check that the search has disappeared.
Use the magnifying glass to quickly find a specific search term. With the calendar icon, you can go straight to a certain date. That is useful if you no longer remember exactly which words you used.
On a computer
- Open Google’s My Activity page.
- Sign in with the Google account you use for YouTube.
- Open YouTube history.
- Find the activity using search or the calendar.
- Click the X next to the search.
- Confirm the deletion if Google asks you to.
Check the top right corner to see which account is active. Many people accidentally clear the history of a different Google profile. After that, the old search term stays in YouTube because it belongs to another account.
How do you delete all YouTube search history?
Use the Delete button on the page with your YouTube history. Then choose the time range you want. For example, you can select today, a custom range, or all time.
Read the confirmation screen carefully. YouTube states there that deleting through this time-range button also removes your watch history from the selected period.

- if you choose today, both your searches and watched videos from today may disappear;
- if you choose all time, all saved YouTube search history and watch history can be removed;
- if you choose a custom period, the deletion only applies to the selected dates.
Do not make a big choice if you only want to remove one suggestion. In that case, delete the single search with the X. That way, you prevent useful watch data from disappearing.
Can you delete only search queries without watch history?
YouTube’s current official explanation warns that the general Delete button also removes watch history from the chosen period. One specific search term can be removed separately using the X next to that search activity.
Always check the screen you see. Google and YouTube may change settings and labels. So do not rely only on an old guide. Read the warning before you confirm the deletion.
Does deleting work the same on iPhone, Android, and computer?
Your search history belongs to your Google account. Because of that, you will mostly see the same history on different devices, as long as you are signed in with the same account.
The exact route differs by device:

A change on your phone can therefore also show up later when you view YouTube on a computer or TV with the same account.
What if you are not signed in?
YouTube can use local data on a device when you are not signed in. Your browser can also store its own history. Removing Google account activity does not automatically erase your browser history.
So first check whether you are signed in. Then clear local data only if it is really needed. That way, you avoid deleting settings or other saved data for no reason.
How do you pause your YouTube search history?
Pausing stops new searches from being saved in your YouTube history while the setting is off. Your existing history stays in place.
Use these steps in the app:
- Tap your profile photo.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Manage all history.
- Open the Controls tab.
- Turn off Include your searches on YouTube.
On a computer, go to My Activity. There, open the saving of YouTube history and turn off the option for YouTube searches.
Pausing does not remove your existing history. It only stops new searches from being saved. Turn the feature back on later if you want personal recommendations based on your search behavior.
When is pausing useful?
Use pausing when you temporarily research something that does not match your usual interests. Think of a school assignment, a gift for someone else, or troubleshooting a technical problem.
For one short session, Incognito mode is often easier. For research that takes several sessions, pausing can be clearer. Do not forget to turn the setting back on when you are done.
How do you set up auto-delete?
On the My Activity page, you can set up automatic deletion. YouTube offers periods of 3, 18, or 36 months.
Use this route on a computer:
- Open My Activity.
- Choose YouTube history.
- Click Auto-delete.
- Choose 3, 18, or 36 months.
- Confirm your choice.
Do you want to keep older activity? Then choose not to delete older activity automatically.
Auto-delete is useful if you do not want to clean up manually all the time. It is not the same as clearing everything at once. Your activity stays until it reaches the age you selected.
What does YouTube Incognito mode do?
When you use Incognito mode, your search history for that session is not added to your account history. YouTube treats that temporary session as if you were signed out.
Incognito is useful for temporary research. It is not a guarantee of full anonymity online, though. Your network administrator, employer, school, internet provider, or the services you visit may still be able to see other data.
Close Incognito mode when you are done. After that, you can continue using your normal signed-in YouTube experience.
What is the difference between Incognito and pausing?
Incognito applies to one separate, temporary session. Pausing is an account setting that stays active until you change it back yourself.
Use Incognito for one short search. Use pausing when you do not want searches saved during several normal sessions.
Why does a deleted search still show up?
First check where you see the term. A suggestion can come from your personal YouTube history, but also from popular searches, predictions, or local browser data.
You used the wrong account
Tap your profile photo and check the email address. Switch to the account where you made the search. Then look at the saved history again.
The app is still showing old local data
Close YouTube completely and open the app again. Then check Manage all history. Update the app if the screen does not load properly or if certain options are missing.
Clearing the cache can help with a display issue. It is not necessary to officially remove your account history. Do not delete all app data unless you know which local settings will be removed too.
It is a general search suggestion
Not every suggestion comes from your personal history. YouTube may keep showing popular or predicted search terms. An old personal search term normally disappears from your own history suggestions after deletion.
Syncing takes time
Wait a moment and refresh the page. You can also test on another device where the same Google account is active. Do not repeat the same deletion action dozens of times in a row.
What changes after your search history is deleted?
Deleted search terms no longer appear as your old searches in the search box. YouTube also stops using these terms to shape your recommendations.
When you delete by time period, your watch history from that period may also disappear. That can change your recommendations more strongly. Your subscriptions, uploaded videos, comments, and playlists are not removed by this history setting.
Does this delete your YouTube channel?
No. Your channel, videos, and subscribers remain. Deleting search history is only a privacy and recommendation setting within your account.
Do you want to make bigger changes to your channel? Then first read what is involved in buying a YouTube channel. Deleting your history is completely separate from that.
Services such as buy YouTube subscribers or buy YouTube livestream views are also not affected by clearing your personal search history. Your account activity and channel results are different parts.
Can you restore deleted search history?
YouTube does not offer an easy restore button for deleted activity. So always check the search term and time period you selected before you confirm the action.
You can enter a search term again later. That does not restore the old activity with the same date and time.
How can you keep more control over your YouTube history?
Always use the smallest action that achieves your goal:
- delete one term when only one suggestion is bothering you;
- choose a custom period for temporary research;
- use auto-delete to clean up regularly;
- pause search history during longer temporary research;
- use Incognito for a short, separate session;
- regularly check which Google account is active;
- secure your account if unknown searches appear.
Do you see search terms that you know you did not enter yourself? Then check the signed-in devices in your Google account. Remove unknown sessions, change your password, and turn on two-step verification.

Forgetting that multiple devices use the same account
History belongs to your account. A deletion can therefore show up on your phone, computer, tablet, and TV.
Only clearing the browser bar
Browser history and YouTube account history are different things. Use Manage all history to delete your YouTube activity.
Using external cleanup apps
You do not need an external app. Use YouTube settings and Google My Activity. Never give your Google password to a cleanup service or an unknown app.
