Mute a Discord server
Do you want to mute a Discord server? Open the server, click or tap the server name, and go to Notification Settings. Turn on Server Mute and choose how long you want to stop receiving notifications. On mobile, tap the server name, then Notifications, and then Mute This Server.
Muting a server does not make you leave the server, and it does not delete any messages. It only stops notifications from that server. Note that @everyone notifications can still sometimes come through. So also turn on suppress @everyone and @here, and suppress all role mentions if you really want peace and quiet.

What does muting a Discord server mean?
Muting a Discord server means Discord no longer sends normal notifications from the channels and activity in that server. Mobile push notifications for that server are also turned off. You stay a member and can still open any channels you have access to.
Muting a server is different from Do Not Disturb. Do Not Disturb applies to your whole Discord account and can also change your visible status. A server mute applies only to the server you chose.
Muting is also different from leaving a server. When you leave a server, it disappears from your server list. When you mute it, the server stays available and you keep your roles and access.
Where do you find the mute setting?
On a computer, click the server name. You can also right-click the server icon. Then open Notification Settings. Turn on Server Mute and choose the duration you want.
On iPhone and Android, first open the server. Tap the server name and choose Notifications. Then open Mute This Server and select the period you want.
The exact wording can differ slightly by language and app version. Look for Notifications, Mute Server, Mute This Server, or Server Mute.
How do you mute an entire Discord server step by step?
- Open Discord on your computer or phone.
- Select the server from the server list.
- Open the menu next to the server name.
- Choose Notification Settings or Notifications.
- Turn on Server Mute.
- Choose how long you want to mute the server.
- Turn on suppress @everyone and @here if you do not want those alerts.
- Turn on suppress all role mentions if roles are mentioned often.
- Check the mobile push notification setting.
- Close the settings and test whether you now have the peace and quiet you want.
Which short checklist really brings peace and quiet?
- Server Mute is enabled.
- The right duration is selected.
- @everyone and @here are suppressed.
- Role mentions are suppressed.
- Notifications for new events are checked.
- Mobile push notifications are set correctly.
- Important channels have an exception if needed.
- Highlights are checked.
- Your phone’s general notification settings are correct.
Which notification levels can you choose?
| Setting | What you receive | When useful | Watch out |
|---|---|---|---|
| All messages | A notification for every message, based on your app settings | A small and important group | Can become overwhelming fast |
| Mentions only | Notifications when you or a broad group is mentioned | Most regular servers | Suppress broad mentions separately |
| Nothing | No normal push notifications | A server you check manually from time to time | An unread marker may still remain visible |
| Server mute | No normal notifications from the entire server | Full or temporary peace and quiet | @everyone may need a separate setting |
| Channel mute | No notifications from one selected channel | A busy channel in an otherwise useful server | Other channels stay active |
| Channel exception | A custom setting for the selected channel | When you only want to follow announcements | Check whether the exception overrides the server setting |
How long can you mute a Discord server?
Discord lets you choose your own duration. The available periods can change by app version. Usually you can choose a short period, a few hours, a day, a week, or until you turn the mute off yourself.
Choose a short mute during an event, class, or meeting. Choose an indefinite mute when you only want to check the server manually. Set a reminder if you do not want to miss important community updates for too long.
Why do you still get notifications after muting a server?
Discord says @everyone notifications can still come through sometimes. So check the suppress @everyone and @here setting. Also turn on suppress all role mentions when a server mentions roles often.
Highlights can work partly separately from your normal notification choices. A full server mute should stop Highlights. Still, check the separate toggle if you are still receiving message highlights or highlight emails.
Direct messages are not server notifications. So DMs can still come in. An unexpected notification may also come from another server with the same name or a similar server icon.
Finally, check your phone’s general settings. Old notifications may already be sitting in your notification center before you muted the server. They do not always disappear automatically.
How do you suppress @everyone and @here?
Open the server notification settings. Then turn on suppress @everyone and @here. This setting prevents alerts when someone mentions all server members or all online members.
A direct mention of your account may still be handled differently. Want absolutely no notifications? Then combine the server mute with the right channel settings and your phone’s notification settings.
How do you suppress role mentions?
Open the same menu and turn on suppress all role mentions. This stops notifications when someone mentions a role you belong to. You can still read the message later.
This choice does not change your role. You also do not lose access to any channels. Only the notification linked to the role mention is changed.
Roles do determine which channels you can see and which permissions you have. Read the explanation of Discord rights if you are an admin and want to organize notifications better.
Can you mute only one Discord channel?
Yes, you can also mute a single Discord channel. Open the channel menu and choose Mute Channel. You can also go to Notification Overrides in the server notification settings. There, select a channel and choose All Messages, Mentions Only, Nothing, or Mute.
A channel mute is useful when one chat is very busy while announcements and other channels still matter. Use a server mute when almost every part of the server is too noisy.
Can you mute a category?
Discord also lets you choose categories through notification overrides. This lets you manage multiple channels in the same group at once. Just check whether individual channels inside the category have their own override.
Use categories for games, projects, classes, or events, for example. That way members can follow only the part that matters to them without muting the whole server.
How do you make one important channel still send notifications?
Mute the server or set the normal server notifications low. Then go to Notification Overrides and choose the important channel. Set it to Mentions Only or All Messages, depending on what you need.
For example, choose All Messages for an announcements channel where only admins can post. For a busier channel, Mentions Only is usually a better choice.
Test the result after setting it up. Discord settings can affect one another. If needed, ask an admin to send a normal test message without using @everyone.
Does server mute work the same on iPhone and Android?
The server setting works almost the same on iPhone and Android. On both platforms, you tap the server name and then Notifications. The phone’s general settings do differ by operating system.
What should you check on iPhone?
Open the iOS Settings app and go to Notifications and Discord. There you can manage banners, sounds, badges, and lock screen notifications. These general choices apply to all of Discord, not just one server.
What should you check on Android?
Open Discord’s app settings on Android and choose Notifications. Android can show different kinds of notifications separately. Also check battery saving if notifications arrive too late or not at all.
What should you check on a computer?
Open server notifications through the server name or right-click the server icon. Also check Discord’s general notification settings and the settings in Windows or macOS.
What changes after you mute a server?
You stay a member of the server. Your roles, messages, permissions, and access do not change. Other members usually cannot see that you muted the server. It is a personal notification setting.
New messages still appear in the channels. You will see them when you open the server. Muting does not delete messages and does not clear unread content from history.
A Server Boost is also not stopped by muting a server. Read what a Discord server is if you want to look at or adjust that feature separately.
When is muting better than leaving?
Mute a server if you may want to come back later, want to keep your roles, or still need information sometimes. Leave a server only if you no longer want to be a member. In a private server, you may need a new invite to get back in.
So a server that is temporarily very busy does not have to disappear from your list. Choose a mute for a day or a week, then decide again whether you want notifications back on.
When is Do Not Disturb better?
Use Do Not Disturb when you do not want notifications from all of Discord for a while, for example during work, study, or sleep. Use a server mute when only one community is too noisy.
You can combine both settings. Just remember which ones are active. That way you do not waste time looking for a technical issue when Do Not Disturb is still on.
Which mistakes do people often make when muting?
- Only choosing Nothing and forgetting to suppress @everyone.
- Confusing a server mute with leaving a server.
- Forgetting that direct messages are managed separately.
- Overlooking an existing channel override.
- Not checking the phone’s general settings.
- Leaving Highlights or event notifications enabled.
- Choosing an indefinite mute and then missing important updates.
Why is a red unread marker still visible?
Not every notification setting removes all visible markers. The Nothing option can stop push notifications while a red or unread marker remains visible on the server. A full server mute should reduce the server marker further, but direct mentions can still appear separately.
Open the server and mark messages as read if you want to clear old markers. Also check whether a hidden or collapsed channel still contains a mention. A notification from another server with the same icon can also cause confusion.
How do you mute Discord during work or sleep?
For one busy community, use a server mute with an end time. For all of Discord, use Do Not Disturb or a notification schedule on your phone. On iPhone or Android, also turn on your sleep focus if you do not want banners or sounds.
Choose an end time that fits your day. A mute until the next morning is often clearer than an indefinite mute if you use the server every day. Let only one important channel send notifications if that is truly necessary.
How do you manage notifications for many servers at once?
Start with the three servers that matter most to you. Set those to Mentions Only or give them targeted channel overrides. Mute servers you mainly use as reference. Leave old servers only after checking that you really no longer need them.
Use one fixed rule. Choose All Messages only for small groups, Mentions Only for active communities, and mute for archives or servers you rarely visit. That keeps your choices clear and predictable.
Review your settings every quarter. A server that used to matter a lot may now be quiet or less relevant. A new project may temporarily need more notifications.
What is the difference between push, sound, and badge?
A push notification appears on your screen. Sound is the audible alert that comes with a notification. A badge is the number or red mark on the app icon. Your phone can often manage these three parts separately.
Discord’s server settings decide which events may trigger a notification. Your phone or computer’s operating system then decides how that notification is shown. If Discord is set correctly but your phone blocks all notifications, nothing will appear.
How do you fix missing or delayed notifications?
- Check that the server was not muted by accident.
- Review all channel overrides.
- Check the mobile push notification setting.
- Open the general phone settings for Discord.
- Check Do Not Disturb, Focus, and Sleep Focus.
- Temporarily turn off strong battery saving.
- Update the Discord app to the latest version.
- Test the settings with one direct mention.
Do not delete the app as your first step. That takes time and does not change any server notification setting stored in your Discord account.
How do you mute a server without missing important announcements?
Set the whole server to low or no notifications. Then make an exception for a channel such as Announcements, News, or Rules. Choose All Messages there if only admins can post in that channel.
Ask the admin which channel is used for important updates. Some servers spread announcements across several channels. In that case, it may be better to mute only the busy conversations instead of the whole server.
Can admins turn off your mute?
No, your personal notification choice is managed only by you. An admin can mention @everyone, @here, or a role. That is why Discord has separate toggles that let you suppress these broad mentions.
An admin can also change the server structure. If an important channel is replaced, you may need to set a new channel override. So check your settings after major changes.
How do you build a personal notification routine?
First choose which servers are really important to you. Give only those servers notifications for all messages or mentions. Set social servers to Mentions Only. Mute servers you only read now and then. That way you do not need to judge every notification individually.
Next, plan one or two fixed times to review muted servers. For example, do this during lunch and at the end of the day. That keeps you connected without Discord constantly interrupting your attention. Adjust the settings when a project, study, or community becomes more important for a while.
Review this routine every month. Leave servers you no longer use. Mute old projects and give an important announcements channel notification access again. A small cleanup keeps your server list manageable and prevents important information from getting lost among unnecessary alerts.
How can server admins make notifications more user-friendly?
Use @everyone and @here only for rare and important messages. Create optional roles for specific topics. Do not post ordinary updates in every channel, and assign one clear channel for important announcements.
Explain to new members how they can adjust their notifications. A well-organized server prevents members from muting everything out of frustration. Start with the Discord server beginner’s guide if your server structure is too busy or unclear.
Want to grow a new community faster as well? Then you can buy Discord server members in a targeted way. First make sure you have clear channels, suitable roles, and friendly notification settings so new members can find their way around easily.
Which questions are frequently asked about muting a Discord server?
Can other members see that I muted a server?
No. A server mute is a personal setting. Your role, access, and visible status do not automatically change because of it.
Does server muting work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Tap the server name, choose Notifications, and turn on the mute. Also check your phone’s general notification settings.
Can I undo the mute later?
Yes. Open the same menu and turn off Server Mute, or choose a new duration. All your messages, roles, and permissions stay intact.
Why do I still get an @everyone notification?
Discord can treat broad mentions separately. So turn on suppress @everyone and @here. Also check whether role mentions are suppressed.
Does muting stop my Discord DMs?
No. Direct messages are not covered by the notification settings for one server. You need to manage DM notifications separately.
Do messages disappear when I mute a server?
No. All messages stay in the channels. You simply receive fewer or no notifications from the server.
Which step can you take first now?
Open the busy server, choose Notification Settings, and turn on Server Mute. Then turn on suppress @everyone, @here, and role mentions. Next, choose one important channel that may still send notifications if needed.
After one day, check whether you have enough peace and quiet without missing important information. Adjust the channel overrides first instead of constantly turning the full server mute on and off.
