How to turn off your active status on Instagram

Actieve status op Instagram uitzetten

You can turn off your Instagram active status by going to Profile > menu > Messages and story replies > Show activity status. Turn off the switch there. People you follow and people you message will then no longer see whether you are currently active or when you were last active.

This has an important consequence. As soon as you hide your active status, you also can’t see the activity status of other accounts. Your profile, messages, followers, photos, Stories, and Reels remain in place.

Below, you’ll learn where to find the setting and how to change it on an iPhone, Android device, or computer. You’ll also find solutions if the option is missing. We also explain what the green dot means and what happens to time stamps and read receipts.

How do you turn off active status on Instagram?

Follow this short path in the Instagram app:

  1. Open Instagram and go to your profile.
  2. Tap the menu with the three lines in the upper right.
  3. Open Messages and story replies.
  4. Tap Show activity status.
  5. Turn off the switch next to Show activity status.

You don’t need to save your choice separately. Instagram applies the change as soon as you turn off the switch. The setting applies to the Instagram account that is open at that time.

Active status is used mainly in Instagram Direct. If the feature is on, a green dot or time stamp may appear next to your profile photo. Other people can then see, for example, that you’re currently active or were active recently.

According to Instagram, this information is visible to people you follow and people you exchange messages with. This means a random visitor to your profile won’t automatically see when you’re online. These indicators mainly appear in chats and the messages area.

Turning it off may feel better if you want less pressure to reply immediately. People will no longer be able to tell from your activity status that you’re using Instagram at that moment.

This doesn’t make you completely invisible. Someone may still notice other actions, such as a new like, comment, Story view, or message you just sent. This setting only hides your activity status. It doesn’t hide everything you do on Instagram.

The setting also doesn’t block anyone. Existing conversations remain available. People can still send you a message if your message and message request settings allow it. Do you want to control who can contact you? Check the separate settings for messages and message requests as well.

Where is activity status in Instagram?

In the Instagram app, you’ll find the feature in the settings for messages and story replies. The most common path is:

  1. Open Instagram.
  2. Sign in to the correct account.
  3. Tap your profile photo in the lower right.
  4. Tap the three lines in the upper right.
  5. Open Messages and story replies.
  6. Choose Show activity status.
  7. Turn off the switch.

In some versions, you’ll first see the heading Settings and activity after opening the menu. The exact name or location may change after an update. You usually don’t need to open Accounts Center. Activity status is part of Instagram’s own interaction and messaging settings.

Also note the difference between Show activity status and Your activity. Under Your activity, you can find information about your time on Instagram, likes, and account history. That section doesn’t control whether other people can see your online status.

Device Path in Instagram Result Common mistake
iPhone Profile > menu > Messages and story replies > Show activity status The green dot and time stamp are hidden Looking in Accounts Center instead of messages
Android Profile > menu > Messages and story replies > Show activity status The green dot and time stamp are hidden An older app version displays a different menu name
Computer More > Settings > Messages and story replies > Show activity status The activity status of the open account is turned off The wrong Instagram account is open

Image 2: switch turned off. Use a screenshot of the Show activity status screen. Point an arrow at the toggle in the off position. Use this caption: “Off means other people can’t see your activity status.”

How do you change active status on iPhone and Android?

Before you begin, check which account is active. Many people manage a personal profile, business profile, or creator account in the same app. You’ll only change the setting for the account you’re currently using.

How do you turn off active status on an iPhone?

  1. Open the Instagram app.
  2. Tap your profile photo in the lower right.
  3. Check at the top that you’re using the correct profile.
  4. Tap the three lines in the upper right.
  5. Scroll, if necessary, to the section about interacting with others.
  6. Open Messages and story replies.
  7. Tap Show activity status.
  8. Turn off the switch.

You don’t need to tap a save button afterward. Return to your profile once the switch is off. If you then open your inbox, you’ll no longer see the activity status of other accounts either.

How do you turn off active status on Android?

  1. Open Instagram and go to your profile.
  2. Check that the correct account is active.
  3. Tap the menu with the three lines in the upper right.
  4. Open Messages and story replies.
  5. Choose Show activity status.
  6. Turn off the switch.

The menu position may vary slightly depending on your screen size, language, or app version. Use the search field in the settings if Instagram provides one. Search for “activity status.” Don’t select Your activity, as that is a different section.

How do you check whether the change worked?

Open the setting again and check the switch. If it’s off, your choice has been saved. You’ll usually notice the change in your inbox as well. The green dots and time stamps from other accounts will no longer be visible there.

Want to be certain? Test the setting with a second account. That account must follow you or have had a Direct conversation with you before. Open the messages area using the second account and check whether the green dot and time stamp are absent from your profile.

A screen may temporarily display old information. Close the messages area and reopen it before deciding whether the change worked. Fully closing and reopening the Instagram app may also help.

Don’t use an unfamiliar app or website to check your activity status. You never need to enter your Instagram password anywhere outside Instagram to test this privacy setting. Services that request your password can put your account at risk.

How does activity status work on a computer?

On a computer, you can change your active status through instagram.com. Follow these steps:

  1. Open instagram.com and sign in.
  2. Check that you’re using the correct account.
  3. Click More in the lower left.
  4. Choose Settings.
  5. Open Messages and story replies.
  6. Click Show activity status.
  7. Turn off the switch.

The result is the same on an iPhone, Android device, and computer. The activity status of the selected account is hidden. On every device, you’ll also lose the ability to view other people’s activity status.

Only the beginning of the path is different. On a phone, you open the settings through your profile photo and the three lines. On instagram.com, you begin in the lower left with More. After that, you go to Messages and story replies on both devices.

You usually don’t need to turn off the status separately on every phone, tablet, or computer. It is an account setting, not a setting that applies to only one device. Do you have multiple Instagram accounts? Check and change the setting separately for each account.

The names may vary depending on your language or Instagram version. In an English interface, the relevant option is called Show Activity Status. In its official help information, Instagram mentions Android, iPhone, computer, mobile browser, Instagram Lite, and iPad.

A switch may have a different colour in light and dark mode. Focus mainly on the switch position rather than only its colour. Open the setting again if you’re unsure.

What can you do if the setting isn’t working?

You usually won’t see an error message. The most common problem is that the option is missing or the change isn’t immediately visible. If this happens, work through the checks below.

You don’t see Show activity status

First, check that you’re looking under Messages and story replies. Your activity and Accounts Center are different sections. Use the search function in the settings if it’s available.

Next, update the Instagram app through the App Store or Google Play. Instagram recommends updating the app first if a feature is missing or isn’t working correctly. Also check whether your phone is using the latest available system version.

After an update, the option may temporarily appear in a slightly different location. Close Instagram completely, reopen the app, and check the settings again.

The switch doesn’t respond

Close Instagram completely and restart the app. If that doesn’t help, restart your phone. Then test the setting once using WiFi and once using mobile data. This helps rule out a temporary connection problem.

You can also try making the change through instagram.com. Sign in and go to More > Settings > Messages and story replies > Show activity status. Turn off the switch there.

You can no longer see other people’s activity status

This isn’t an error. Instagram connects both sides of the feature. If your activity status is off, you can’t see who is active, who was recently active, or who is in a conversation at the same time as you.

Do you want to see this information again? Follow the same path and turn your activity status back on. The relevant accounts will then be able to see your status again as well.

Someone says you still appear to be active

First, ask what the person is actually seeing. A new message, like, reaction, or Story view may show that you used Instagram. This isn’t the same as the green activity indicator or the notice that you were recently active.

Next, check whether you changed the setting on the correct account. Open the switch again. Then close and reload the messages screen on both devices.

If the feature is clearly still not working, go in the app to Profile > menu > Help > Report a problem. Clearly describe what you see. You can include a screenshot if necessary, but make sure names and sensitive message content aren’t visible.

What changes after you turn it off?

After you turn it off, people you follow and people you exchange messages with can no longer use activity status to see when you were last active or whether you’re currently active. The special indicator showing that you’re active in a conversation at the same time is also no longer displayed as activity information.

In return, you can no longer view other people’s activity status. You won’t be able to see whether someone is currently active, was recently active, or is present in a conversation at the same time. This can make conversations feel more relaxed. However, you’ll have less information about when a reply may arrive.

What stays the same?

  • Your profile remains discoverable according to your existing privacy choices.
  • Your followers and following list remain the same.
  • Your posted photos, videos, Reels, and Stories aren’t deleted.
  • Your previous Direct conversations and their content remain.
  • People can still message you according to your existing message settings.
  • Likes, comments, and Story views aren’t hidden.
  • Your account type doesn’t change.
  • Your reach and statistics aren’t directly changed by this choice.

Turning off active status doesn’t make a public account private. If you want to prevent unknown people from seeing all your content, you need to set your account to private separately. Different options apply to a business profile because this type of profile is normally public.

This choice also doesn’t stop Instagram from suggesting content or accounts to you. Do you want to see fewer recommendations? Use the separate guide to turn off suggestions for you on Instagram.

The setting also doesn’t show you who opened your profile. Instagram doesn’t provide a standard visitor list for profiles. If you’re unsure, read how to permanently delete an Instagram account. This helps you avoid confusing activity status with profile visits.

Does active status affect your growth?

Turning off your active status doesn’t change how many people can view your posts, Stories, or Reels. The setting only affects visible information in and around messages. You can continue posting and replying as usual.

If you want more privacy and better visibility at the same time, focus on strong content, a consistent posting schedule, and clear interaction with your audience. As an additional step, you can buy Instagram followers or Instagram likes from SocialKings. These choices are separate from your activity status.

For videos and Reels, the view count is a separate metric. It isn’t hidden or removed when you turn off your active status. If you want to give a video more attention, you can also buy Instagram views. Continue posting relevant content that suits your audience.

Are read receipts turned off as well?

No. Activity status shows whether you’re currently active or when you were last active. A notice that a message has been seen is a separate indicator. Don’t assume that read receipts will disappear automatically.

Check the separate messaging settings if you want to manage read receipts. The available options may vary by account, app version, or region.

Frequently asked questions about active status

Where can I find the option to turn off my active status?

In the app, go to your profile and tap the three lines in the upper right. Open Messages and story replies. Then choose Show activity status and turn off the switch. On a computer, begin at More > Settings.

Does turning off active status work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. Instagram supports this setting on iPhone and Android. The path and result are nearly the same. You can also manage the status on a computer or through a mobile browser.

Can I reverse the change later?

Yes. You can turn activity status back on at any time. Follow the same path and turn on the switch. The relevant accounts can then see your status again, and you can view other people’s status again.

Why can’t I see the option?

You’re probably looking under Your activity or in Accounts Center. The correct location is Messages and story replies. Update the Instagram app, restart it, and search for “activity status” in the settings if the option is still missing.

Can I hide my status from one person?

The standard activity status switch applies to the entire account. It doesn’t allow you to select one specific person. Do you want to limit contact or visibility for a particular account? Review the options to restrict, block, and manage message requests. Each feature has a different effect.

Does turning it off affect existing content?

No. Your posts, Reels, Stories, followers, and Direct conversations aren’t deleted or changed. Only the visible information about when you’re active changes. Other actions, such as likes, comments, and Story views, may remain visible where Instagram normally displays them.

Does the green dot disappear immediately?

The change is usually applied immediately. Sometimes an open screen may still display old information. Close the messages area and reopen it. Then check whether the switch is still off.

Can people still see that I viewed a Story?

Yes. Turning off your active status doesn’t hide Story views. The owner of a Story can still see your account in the viewer list as long as Instagram makes that information available.

Can people still message me?

Yes. Active status doesn’t block messages. People can still message you according to your existing conversation and message request settings. Adjust those settings separately if you want to receive fewer messages.

What is the best first step?

Open your Instagram profile and go to Messages and story replies > Show activity status. Turn off the switch. Then check whether you can no longer see the activity of other accounts. This is a clear sign that the change is active.

Next, decide which problem you want to solve. Do you only want to appear less visible online? This setting is usually enough. Do you want fewer suggestions? Adjust your recommendations separately. Is another feature not working properly, such as audio in a Story or Reel? Check the solutions for when Instagram music isn’t working.

Try not to change several privacy options at once. Adjust one setting first and check the result. This keeps things clear and makes it easy to turn active status back on later.
