How to delete Instagram history and search suggestions

Want to delete your Instagram search history or remove frustrating search suggestions? Fortunately, you can do it fairly quickly. You can clear all your recent searches at once, remove individual profiles from your search bar and manually hide certain suggestions. Good to know: clearing your search history does not mean Instagram immediately forgets all your suggestions. Instagram also considers what you view, like and follow, as well as which accounts you interact with.

That is why it helps not only to clear your history, but also to understand why certain names, hashtags or places keep returning. This gives you much more control over what you see when you open the search bar.

Delete your Instagram search history

Your Instagram search history consists of searches you have made recently. These can include profiles, hashtags, music, locations or topics you have searched for. As soon as you tap the search bar, Instagram may display these searches again.

Sometimes that is useful because you can quickly return to a profile or hashtag. However, it can also be frustrating. Perhaps you do not want someone beside you to see what you searched for. Maybe you no longer want to see an old search. Or perhaps you simply want a cleaner search page without old names and irrelevant results.

You can delete your search history in two ways:

  • Clear everything at once: useful when you want a fresh start.
  • Delete individual searches: useful when you only want to remove one profile, hashtag or place.

Delete search history through the Instagram app

The quickest method is usually through the search page itself. It works almost identically on iPhone and Android.

  1. Open the Instagram app.
  2. Tap the magnifying glass at the bottom.
  3. Tap the search bar at the top.
  4. Your recent searches will now appear.
  5. Tap See all if you want to view more results.
  6. Tap Clear all to delete your entire list.

Do you want to keep some searches? You can clear a specific search instead.

  1. Open Instagram.
  2. Tap the magnifying glass.
  3. Tap the search bar.
  4. Find the name, hashtag or location you want to remove.
  5. Tap the X icon beside that search.

Once you remove it, that search will no longer appear in your recent search list. Keep in mind that if you search for that account or hashtag again later, Instagram may save it again.

Clear search history through your settings

Instagram occasionally changes its menu names. If you do not immediately see the option in the search bar, you can also check your settings. The path may vary slightly by account, but it usually works like this:

  1. Open Instagram.
  2. Tap your profile picture at the bottom right.
  3. Tap the three lines at the top right.
  4. Go to Accounts Center.
  5. Select Your information and permissions.
  6. Tap Search history.
  7. Select the account whose search history you want to clear.
  8. Tap Clear all searches.

If you use multiple Instagram accounts, carefully check which account you selected. Search history is cleared separately for each account. You can also find Instagram’s official explanation in the Instagram Help Center article about deleting search history.

Delete search history on a computer

Do you use Instagram in a browser on your laptop or desktop computer? You can remove your recent searches there as well.

  1. Go to instagram.com and log in.
  2. Click Search on the left.
  3. Your recent searches will now appear.
  4. Click the X icon beside a search to remove it individually.
  5. Click Clear all if you want to delete the entire list.

The desktop version is particularly useful when you want to review many searches. On a larger screen, it is easier to see which profiles or hashtags you want to keep and which ones you would prefer to remove.

Remove search suggestions on Instagram

Search suggestions are the profiles, hashtags, locations or topics that Instagram recommends before you finish searching. They look similar to your search history, but they are not exactly the same.

A search is something you previously typed yourself. A search suggestion may also appear because Instagram thinks it matches your interests. For example, you may frequently view a particular profile, follow similar accounts or have interacted with certain content.

Remove individual search suggestions

Want to remove a specific suggestion? You can usually do so directly from the search bar.

  1. Open Instagram.
  2. Tap the magnifying glass.
  3. Tap the search bar.
  4. Review the suggestions that appear.
  5. Tap the X icon beside the profile, hashtag or location you want to remove.

Instagram will then hide that suggestion from view. A similar suggestion may still return later, especially if you view the same account again or continue opening similar content.

What is the difference between search history and search suggestions?

Item What does it mean? Can you remove it?
Search history Searches you previously made yourself, such as profiles, hashtags and places. Yes, you can delete individual searches or clear everything.
Search suggestions Suggestions Instagram displays based on your activity and possible interests. Yes, you can manually hide some of them, although they may return.
Recommended accounts Accounts Instagram thinks you may want to follow. You can usually hide them or make them appear less frequently.
Suggested posts Posts in your feed or Explore that Instagram selects based on what you view. You can tell Instagram that you are not interested in something.

Do you mostly see many recommended accounts in your feed or around your profile? It can also help to review your recommendations. Learn more in Turning off suggestions for you on Instagram: how to remove suggestions.

Why do search suggestions keep appearing?

Many people clear their search history and then expect a blank, neutral search page. In practice, Instagram does not work that simply. Your recent searches are only one part of what Instagram uses to generate suggestions.

Instagram also considers other factors, including:

  • Which profiles you view.
  • Which posts you like or save.
  • Which Stories or Reels you respond to.
  • Which accounts you follow.
  • Which accounts follow you.
  • Which hashtags you view frequently.
  • Which locations you open.
  • Which accounts share mutual followers with you.
  • Whether you connected Instagram and Facebook.

As a result, a suggestion may return even after you delete the original search. For example, imagine you remove a profile from your search history but then watch that profile’s Stories again. Instagram may still consider that profile relevant to you.

How does Instagram create search suggestions?

Instagram tries to help you quickly find what you are probably looking for. That is why suggestions are often adjusted based on how you use the platform. If you view a lot of sports content, you are more likely to see sports accounts. If you often look at recipes, you are more likely to see food accounts, hashtags or creators in that area.

Search suggestions may come from factors such as:

  • Your previous searches: profiles, hashtags, music or places you searched for.
  • Your viewing behaviour: accounts whose posts, Reels or Stories you open.
  • Your likes and comments: content you respond to or enjoy.
  • Your follower network: accounts that are popular with people you follow.
  • Connected Meta accounts: information from connected accounts can influence what Instagram displays.

That does not mean every suggestion will seem logical. Sometimes one quick click is enough to make a profile appear more frequently. Instagram may also display an account because many people in your network interact with it, rather than because you intentionally searched for it.

Reduce search suggestions after clearing your search history

Do you want certain suggestions to return less frequently? It helps to look beyond your search history alone.

  • Remove individual suggestions manually using the X icon in the search bar.
  • Stop viewing the profile that keeps returning.
  • Like and save less content about the topic you no longer want to see.
  • Use Not interested on posts or Reels that are not relevant to you.
  • Check connected accounts if you use Facebook and Instagram together.
  • Unfollow accounts if they lead to many similar recommendations.

This may not work immediately. Instagram needs some time to process your new behaviour. If you consistently interact less with certain content, the suggestions usually improve over time.

What happens when you delete your search history?

When you delete your search history, your recent searches disappear from the search bar. If someone picks up your phone and taps search, they will no longer see that list.

However, the following does not happen:

  • Your likes are not deleted.
  • Your comments are not deleted.
  • Instagram does not forget every profile you viewed.
  • Your following list does not change.
  • Your recommendations are not fully reset.

Clearing your search history is therefore mainly useful for visible privacy in the search bar. It does not fully reset your Instagram account.

Prevent someone from seeing your Instagram history

If someone else uses your phone, they may quickly see what appears in your search bar. That can feel uncomfortable, even when you are not doing anything wrong. Perhaps you are searching for a gift, an old contact, a competitor, a creator or simply something that feels private.

These steps can make your Instagram activity much less visible to other people.

1. Delete your search history regularly

Get into the habit of clearing your recent searches occasionally, especially if you often lend someone your phone or use Instagram while another person is looking at your screen.

  1. Go to the search page.
  2. Tap the search bar.
  3. Remove individual searches using the X icon.
  4. Or select Clear all.

2. Remove sensitive suggestions immediately

Do you see a profile or hashtag that you would prefer not to have in your search bar? Remove it immediately. The longer you continue clicking it, the more likely Instagram is to keep treating it as relevant.

3. Turn off notifications on your phone

Instagram notifications may appear on your lock screen. They can sometimes display an account name, comment or message. If you would rather hide that information, you can adjust notifications through your phone settings.

  • Open your phone settings.
  • Find Instagram in the app list.
  • Go to notifications.
  • Turn off notifications or hide previews on the lock screen.

4. Use a passcode or facial recognition

The safest way to prevent someone from seeing your Instagram history is straightforward: make sure other people cannot simply access your phone or app. Use a strong passcode, facial recognition or fingerprint protection if your phone supports it.

5. Log out on shared devices

Do you use Instagram on someone else’s computer, at school, at work or on a shared tablet? Always log out. Do not simply close the tab because your session may remain active.

Occasionally check where you are logged in as well. You can do this through your Instagram settings under account security or in the Accounts Center. If you see a device you do not recognize, log out on that device and change your password.

6. Use a separate account if necessary

Some people use a separate Instagram account to follow certain topics or conduct research. This may be useful if you want to keep your personal account organized. Use it in a normal and safe way. Do not create accounts to bother other people or bypass privacy rules.

Reduce unwanted recommendations in your feed

Search suggestions are not the only recommendations Instagram displays. You also see suggested posts, Reels and accounts in your feed or on the Explore page. If they are not relevant to you, you can tell Instagram that you want to see fewer of them.

You can usually do this by tapping the three dots on a post and selecting Not interested. Instagram uses that signal to display similar posts less frequently. The exact options may vary by app version, but the principle remains the same: tell Instagram what you do not want to see and interact more with content you find interesting.

Instagram also explains how to manage suggested content in the Instagram Help Center article about suggested posts.

What really helps you get better suggestions?

  • Follow accounts that match what you want to see more frequently.
  • Use Not interested on posts that are not relevant.
  • Delete old searches you no longer need.
  • Stop clicking accounts you no longer want Instagram to suggest.
  • Save posts you genuinely find useful or enjoyable.
  • View less content that you do not actually want to see again.

Instagram mainly learns through repetition. Hiding something once may help, but your behaviour over a longer period usually has more influence.

Instagram search history and your account’s appearance

Your search history is private, but your overall Instagram activity affects what you see, who you discover and how organized your account feels. If you actively use Instagram for a brand, creator profile or business, it is particularly helpful to clean up your account regularly.

Consider deleting old searches, unfollowing irrelevant accounts, keeping your profile tidy and paying closer attention to what you like or save. This makes Instagram more pleasant to use and helps you see genuinely useful content more frequently.

Are you also working on your profile’s visibility? In addition to cleaning up your settings, you can review your content, profile text, Reels, Stories and interactions with your audience. On the Instagram services page, you will find different options for additional support. Some users combine this with buying Instagram followers, buying Instagram likes or Instagram views. Always treat this as a supplement to good content, not a replacement for a strong and trustworthy profile.

Do you use Stories frequently to remain visible? It is also worth reviewing the structure and style of your Stories. For inspiration about formats, timing and creative ideas, you can read this guide to Instagram Stories.

Common mistakes when deleting Instagram history

Assuming everything is gone after using Clear all

Clear all removes your recent searches, but it does not remove all your Instagram activity. Likes, comments, followers, saved posts and viewed content remain. As a result, some suggestions may still return.

Clicking the same suggestion repeatedly

If you remove a suggestion and then open the same profile again, you once again tell Instagram that it is relevant. If you want to see something less frequently, click it less frequently as well.

Only deleting the app

Removing the Instagram app from your phone generally does not clear the search history on your account. When you log in again, much of that information may return. Delete your search history within Instagram itself instead.

Forgetting that you have multiple accounts

Many people have a personal account, a business account and perhaps even a test account. Your search history may be different for each account. Always make sure you are checking the correct account.

Not logging out on shared devices

If you remain logged in on a shared computer, someone else can open your account. That is a greater privacy concern than visible search history alone. Always log out after using a shared device.

Frequently asked questions about Instagram history and search suggestions

Can someone else see my Instagram search history?

Not remotely under normal circumstances. Your search history is not public on your profile. However, someone with access to your phone, app or logged in browser may be able to see your recent searches by tapping the search bar.

Do my search suggestions disappear immediately after I clear them?

Your recent searches usually disappear immediately. Suggestions may still appear because Instagram also considers your likes, followed accounts, viewed content and other activity.

Can I turn off search suggestions completely?

Instagram generally does not provide one simple button that completely turns off all search suggestions. You can remove individual suggestions, clear your search history and adjust your activity so Instagram displays unwanted suggestions less frequently.

Why does the same profile keep returning to my search bar?

This may happen because you previously searched for, viewed or liked the profile, or because the account has significant overlap with people you follow. Mutual followers and similar interests may also play a role.

Will someone be notified if I delete my search history?

No. Instagram does not notify other users when you clear your search history or remove a suggestion.

Can someone see that I searched for their profile?

Instagram does not show users who searched for their profile. Stories are different: if you view someone’s Story, that person can see your name in the viewer list for as long as that list is available.

Does a private account help protect search history?

A private account mainly controls who can see your posts and Stories. It does not automatically hide your search history from someone using your phone or logged in account. To protect your search privacy, you still need to clear your history and properly secure your device.

Can I recover my Instagram search history after deleting it?

Usually, there is no easy way to recover it through the search bar. Once you delete a search, it disappears from your recent search list. If you search for the same profile or hashtag again, Instagram can save it again.

Get more control over what Instagram shows you

Deleting your Instagram search history is a useful first step if you want more privacy or a cleaner search page. Remove individual searches when you want to quickly get rid of something, or clear everything when you want to begin with a clean list.

If you also want to see fewer unwanted suggestions, you will need to do a little more. Hide individual suggestions, click less often on accounts you do not want to see again and tell Instagram more frequently what does not interest you. Over time, your search page will feel calmer, more relevant and more personal.
