How to delete your Instagram history and search suggestions
Want to delete your Instagram search history or remove annoying search suggestions? Fortunately, you can do it quite quickly. You can clear all your recent searches at once, remove individual profiles from your search bar and manually hide certain suggestions. It is worth knowing that clearing your search history does not mean Instagram instantly forgets all your suggestions. Instagram also considers what you view, like and follow, as well as which accounts you interact with.
That is why it helps to not only clear your history, but also understand why some names, hashtags or places keep returning. This gives you much more control over what you see when you open the search bar.
Delete your Instagram search history
Your Instagram search history consists of recent searches you have made. This can include profiles, hashtags, music, locations or topics you have searched for. As soon as you tap the search bar, Instagram may show these searches again.
Sometimes that is useful because you can quickly return to a profile or hashtag. However, it can also be annoying. You might not want someone next to you to see what you searched for. You might no longer want to see an old search. Or you might simply want a cleaner search page without old names and irrelevant results.
You can delete your search history in two ways:
- Clear everything at once: useful if you want a fresh start.
- Delete individual searches: useful if you only want to remove one profile, hashtag or place.
Delete search history through the Instagram app
The quickest method is usually through the search page itself. It works in almost the same way on iPhone and Android.
- Open the Instagram app.
- Tap the magnifying glass at the bottom.
- Tap the search bar at the top.
- Your recent searches will now appear.
- Tap See all if you want to view more results.
- Tap Clear all to delete your full list.
Do you not want to delete everything? You can also clear one specific search.
- Open Instagram.
- Tap the magnifying glass.
- Tap the search bar.
- Find the name, hashtag or location you want to remove.
- Tap the X icon next to that search.
After removing it, you will no longer see that search in your recent searches. Keep in mind that if you search for that account or hashtag again later, Instagram may save it again.
Clear search history through your settings
Instagram sometimes changes its menu names. If you do not see the option immediately in the search bar, you can also check your settings. The path may differ slightly between accounts, but it usually works like this:
- Open Instagram.
- Tap your profile picture at the bottom right.
- Tap the three lines at the top right.
- Go to Accounts Centre.
- Choose Your information and permissions.
- Tap Search history.
- Choose the account whose search history you want to clear.
- Tap Clear all searches.
If you use multiple Instagram accounts, check carefully which account you have selected. Search history is cleared separately for each account. You can also find Instagram’s official explanation in the Instagram Help Centre article about deleting search history.
Delete search history on a computer
Do you use Instagram in a browser on your laptop or desktop computer? You can also remove your recent searches there.
- Go to instagram.com and log in.
- Click Search on the left.
- Your recent searches will now appear.
- Click the X icon next to a search to remove it individually.
- Click Clear all if you want to delete the full list.
The desktop version is particularly useful if you want to go through many searches. On a larger screen, it is easier to see which profiles or hashtags you want to keep and which you would prefer to remove.
Remove search suggestions on Instagram
Search suggestions are the profiles, hashtags, locations or topics that Instagram suggests before you have even finished searching. They look similar to your search history, but they are not exactly the same.
A search is something you previously typed in yourself. A search suggestion can also appear because Instagram thinks it matches your interests. For example, this may be because you often view a certain profile, follow similar accounts or have interacted with particular content.
Remove individual search suggestions
Want to remove a specific suggestion? You can usually do so directly from the search bar.
- Open Instagram.
- Tap the magnifying glass.
- Tap the search bar.
- Look at the suggestions that appear.
- Tap the X icon next to the profile, hashtag or location you want to remove.
Instagram will then hide that suggestion from view. Sometimes a similar suggestion may return later, especially if you view the same account again or keep opening similar content.
What is the difference between search history and search suggestions?
| Part | What does it mean? | Can you remove it? |
|---|---|---|
| Search history | Searches you previously made yourself, such as profiles, hashtags and places. | Yes, you can delete individual searches or clear everything. |
| Search suggestions | Suggestions Instagram shows based on your activity and possible interests. | Yes, you can manually hide some of them, but they may return. |
| Recommended accounts | Accounts Instagram thinks you may want to follow. | You can usually hide them or make them appear less often. |
| Suggested posts | Posts in your feed or Explore that Instagram chooses based on what you view. | You can tell Instagram that you are not interested in something. |
Do you mainly see lots of recommended accounts in your feed or around your profile? It can also help to review your recommendations. You can learn more in Turning off suggestions for you on Instagram: how to remove suggestions.
Why do search suggestions keep appearing?
Many people clear their search history and then expect a blank, neutral search page. In reality, Instagram does not work that simply. Your recent searches are only one part of what Instagram uses to create suggestions.
Instagram also considers other factors, such as:
- Which profiles you view.
- Which posts you like or save.
- Which Stories or Reels you respond to.
- Which accounts you follow.
- Which accounts follow you.
- Which hashtags you often view.
- Which locations you open.
- Which accounts share mutual followers with you.
- Whether you have connected Instagram and Facebook.
As a result, a suggestion can return even after you have deleted the original search. For example, imagine you remove a profile from your search history but then watch that profile’s Stories again. Instagram may still think that profile interests you.
How does Instagram create search suggestions?
Instagram tries to help you quickly find what you are probably looking for. That is why suggestions are often adjusted to suit how you use the platform. If you view lots of sports content, you are more likely to see sports accounts. If you often look at recipes, you are more likely to see food accounts, hashtags or creators in that area.
Search suggestions can come from factors such as:
- Your previous searches: profiles, hashtags, music or places you have searched for.
- Your viewing behaviour: accounts whose posts, Reels or Stories you open.
- Your likes and comments: content you react to or enjoy.
- Your follower network: accounts that are popular with people you follow.
- Connected Meta accounts: information from connected accounts can affect what Instagram shows.
That does not mean every suggestion will seem logical. Sometimes one quick click is enough to make a profile appear more often. Instagram can also show an account because many people in your network are interacting with it, rather than because you deliberately searched for it yourself.
Reduce search suggestions after clearing your search history
Do you want certain suggestions to return less often? It helps to look beyond just your search history.
- Remove individual suggestions manually using the X icon in the search bar.
- Stop viewing the profile that keeps returning.
- Like and save less content about the topic you no longer want to see.
- Use Not interested on posts or Reels that do not suit you.
- Check connected accounts if you use Facebook and Instagram together.
- Unfollow accounts if they lead to many similar recommendations.
This does not always work immediately. Instagram needs some time to process your new behaviour. If you consistently interact less with certain content, the suggestions usually improve over time.
What happens when you delete your search history?
When you delete your search history, your recent searches disappear from the search bar. If someone picks up your mobile and taps search, they will no longer see that list.
However, the following does not happen:
- Your likes are not deleted.
- Your comments are not deleted.
- Instagram does not forget every profile you have viewed.
- Your following list does not change.
- Your recommendations are not fully reset.
Clearing your search history is therefore mainly useful for visible privacy in the search bar. It is not a full reset of your Instagram account.
Stop someone from seeing your Instagram history
If someone else uses your mobile, they may quickly see what is in your search bar. That can feel uncomfortable, even if you are not doing anything wrong. You might be searching for a gift, an old contact, a competitor, a creator or simply something that feels private.
By following these steps, you can make your Instagram use much less visible to other people.
1. Delete your search history regularly
Make a habit of clearing your recent searches from time to time, especially if you often lend your mobile to someone or use Instagram while another person is watching.
- Go to the search page.
- Tap the search bar.
- Remove individual searches using the X icon.
- Or choose Clear all.
2. Remove sensitive suggestions straight away
Do you see a profile or hashtag that you would rather not have in your search bar? Remove it immediately. The longer you keep selecting it, the more likely Instagram is to continue treating it as interesting.
3. Turn off notifications on your mobile
Instagram notifications can appear on your lock screen. They can sometimes show an account name, comment or message. If you do not want that, you can adjust notifications through your mobile settings.
- Open your mobile settings.
- Find Instagram in the app list.
- Go to notifications.
- Turn notifications off or hide previews on the lock screen.
4. Use a passcode or facial recognition
The safest way to stop someone from seeing your Instagram history is simple: make sure other people cannot easily access your mobile or app. Use a strong passcode, facial recognition or fingerprint protection if your mobile supports it.
5. Log out on shared devices
Do you use Instagram on someone else’s computer, at school, at work or on a shared tablet? Always log out. Do not simply close the tab, because your session may remain active.
Also check from time to time where you are logged in. You can do this through your Instagram settings under account security or in Accounts Centre. If you see a device you do not recognise, log out on that device and change your password.
6. Use a separate account if needed
Some people use a separate Instagram account to follow certain topics or conduct research. That can be useful if you want to keep your personal account tidy. Use this in a normal and safe way. Do not create accounts to bother other people or get around privacy rules.
Reduce unwanted recommendations in your feed
Search suggestions are not the only recommendations Instagram shows. You also see suggested posts, Reels and accounts in your feed or on the Explore page. If they do not suit you, you can tell Instagram that you want to see fewer of them.
You can usually do this by tapping the three dots on a post and choosing Not interested. Instagram uses that signal to show similar posts less often. The exact options may differ between app versions, but the principle stays the same: tell Instagram what you do not want to see and interact more with the content you find interesting.
Instagram also explains how to manage suggested content in the Instagram Help Centre article about suggested posts.
What really helps you get better suggestions?
- Follow accounts that match what you want to see more often.
- Use Not interested on posts that do not suit you.
- Delete old searches you no longer need.
- Stop selecting accounts you no longer want Instagram to suggest.
- Save posts you genuinely find useful or enjoyable.
- View less content that you do not actually want to see again.
Instagram mainly learns through repetition. Hiding something once can help, but your behaviour over a longer period usually has more influence.
Instagram search history and your account’s appearance
Your search history is private, but your overall Instagram use affects what you see, who you discover and how organised your account feels. If you actively use Instagram for a brand, creator profile or business, it is particularly sensible to clean up your account regularly.
Consider deleting old searches, unfollowing irrelevant accounts, keeping your profile tidy and being more aware of what you like or save. This makes Instagram more pleasant to use and helps you see content that is genuinely useful to you more often.
Are you also working on your profile visibility? Along with cleaning up your settings, you can review your content, profile text, Reels, Stories and interactions with your audience. On the Instagram services page, you will find various options for additional support. Some users combine this with buying Instagram followers, buying Instagram likes or Instagram views. Always treat this as an addition to good content, not as a replacement for a strong and trustworthy profile.
Do you use Stories regularly to stay visible? It is also sensible to consider the structure and style of your Stories. For inspiration about formats, timing and creative ideas, you can read this guide to Instagram Stories.
Common mistakes when deleting Instagram history
Thinking everything is gone after selecting Clear all
Clear all removes your recent searches, but not all your Instagram activity. Likes, comments, followers, saved posts and viewed content remain. As a result, some suggestions may still return.
Selecting the same suggestion repeatedly
If you remove a suggestion but then open the same profile again, you are telling Instagram once more that it is relevant. If you want to see something less often, select it less often too.
Only deleting the app
Removing the Instagram app from your mobile usually does not clear the search history on your account. As soon as you log in again, much of the information may still return. Delete your search history within Instagram itself instead.
Forgetting that you have multiple accounts
Many people have a personal account, a business account and perhaps even a test account. Your search history can differ between accounts. Always check that you have selected the correct account.
Not logging out on shared devices
If you remain logged in on a shared computer, someone else can open your account. That is a greater privacy concern than visible search history alone. Always log out after use.
Frequently asked questions about Instagram history and search suggestions
Can someone else see my Instagram search history?
Not simply from a remote location. Your search history is not public on your profile. However, someone who has access to your mobile, app or logged in browser may be able to see your recent searches by tapping the search bar.
Do my search suggestions disappear immediately after clearing?
Your recent searches usually disappear straight away. Suggestions can still appear because Instagram also considers your likes, followed accounts, viewed content and other activity.
Can I turn off search suggestions completely?
Instagram usually does not provide one simple button that turns off all search suggestions completely. You can remove individual suggestions, clear your search history and adjust your activity so that Instagram shows unwanted suggestions less often.
Why does the same profile keep returning to my search bar?
This can happen because you previously searched for, viewed or liked the profile, or because the account has significant overlap with people you follow. Mutual followers and similar interests can also play a role.
Will someone be notified if I delete my search history?
No. Instagram does not send a notification to other users when you clear your search history or remove a suggestion.
Can someone see that I searched for their profile?
Instagram does not show users who searched for their profile. Stories are different: if you view someone’s Story, that person can see your name in the viewer list for as long as that list is available.
Does a private account help with search history?
A private account mainly controls who can see your posts and Stories. It does not automatically hide your search history from someone who uses your mobile or logged in account. For search privacy, you still need to clear your history and properly secure your device.
Can I recover my Instagram search history after deleting it?
Usually, there is no easy way to recover it through the search bar. Once you delete a search, it disappears from your recent searches. If you search for the same profile or hashtag again, Instagram can save it again.
More control over what Instagram shows you
Deleting your Instagram search history is a good first step if you want more privacy or want to tidy up your search page. Remove individual searches if you want to quickly get rid of something, or clear everything if you want to begin with a clean list.
If you also want to see fewer unwanted suggestions, you will need to do a little more. Hide individual suggestions, select accounts you do not want to see again less often and tell Instagram more frequently what you are not interested in. Over time, your search page should feel calmer, more relevant and more personalised.
