Why can’t I follow anyone on Instagram anymore?

Can you suddenly no longer follow anyone on Instagram? There is a good chance that Instagram has temporarily blocked your follow action. This often happens when you follow, unfollow, like or comment on many accounts in a short time. Sometimes it is not a block at all, but a glitch, a poor internet connection, an outdated app or the fact that you already follow the maximum number of accounts.

The good news is that this is usually temporary. The most important thing is not to keep tapping the follow button or start trying lots of other actions straight away. First, calmly check what is going on, then fix it.

Why can I no longer follow anyone on Instagram?

If you tap Follow on Instagram and nothing happens, or the button jumps back straight away, Instagram probably does not see your action as normal use. Instagram tries to stop fake accounts, bots and spam. Because of that, real users can also be limited for a while if their behaviour looks too fast or too repetitive.

You will usually notice a follow block in one of these ways:

  • You tap Follow, but the account is not followed.
  • The button changes for a moment and then goes back.
  • Instagram shows a message saying your action is limited or that you should try again later.
  • Other actions, such as liking or commenting, also stop working properly for a while.
  • The problem happens on several profiles, not just one specific account.

Does following fail for only one person while it works for other accounts? The problem may be with that specific profile. The person may have blocked you, the account may be private or something may be temporarily wrong with that profile.

Common reasons

Cause How can you tell? What can you do?
Too many accounts followed in a short time The follow button stops working or Instagram shows a warning. Stop following, liking and commenting for a while. Wait until the block is gone.
You already follow 7500 accounts You can still do other things, but you cannot follow new accounts. First, unfollow accounts that are no longer interesting to you.
Instagram sees your behaviour as spam You have performed many of the same actions in a row, such as following, unfollowing or commenting. Use Instagram more slowly and naturally. Avoid repetitive actions.
The app has an error or is outdated The app freezes, loads poorly or does not save actions. Update Instagram, fully close the app or reinstall it.
Poor internet connection Profiles load slowly and buttons do not respond properly. Switch between Wi Fi and mobile data, then open Instagram again.
Many logins on different devices Instagram asks for verification more often or temporarily limits actions. Log out on devices you do not use and properly secure your account.

Too many accounts followed in a short time

This is the most common reason. Many people quickly follow dozens or even hundreds of profiles in the hope that some will follow back. Instagram spots this kind of behaviour quickly, especially if you combine it with lots of likes, comments or unfollows.

This can also happen with real accounts. For example, it may happen when you have just created a new profile, found a new niche or started networking actively. To Instagram, it can then look like your account is being controlled automatically.

Do not use strict daily limits as a safe rule. Instagram does not share exact action limits for every account, and they can differ from one profile to another. A new account, an account with little activity or an account that has just logged in from a new device will often be limited faster than an older, trusted account.

You have reached the 7500 following limit

Instagram lets you follow up to 7500 accounts. If you have reached that number, you cannot follow new people until you unfollow some accounts first.

This is not a punishment or a temporary ban. It is simply an Instagram limit. You can resolve it by cleaning up your following list. Start with inactive accounts, accounts whose content you no longer watch or profiles you only followed once in the hope that they would follow you back.

Instagram has temporarily limited your action

Instagram can block one action, but sometimes it can block several actions at once. You may then be unable to follow anyone and also unable to like or comment. This is often called an action block.

According to Instagram rules, users may not use the platform for spam, deception or automated behaviour. You can find the official explanation in the Instagram Terms of Use and in Instagram help information about community guidelines.

For regular users, this mainly means not performing too many of the same actions in a row. If you follow twenty profiles one after another, then immediately like twenty posts and post the same comment everywhere, Instagram may see that as suspicious behaviour.

Your internet connection or app is not working properly

Not every follow problem is a block. Sometimes Instagram simply did not process your action correctly. This happens especially with weak Wi Fi, an unstable mobile connection or an app that has been open for a long time.

First, check the simple things:

  • Open another app or website to check whether your internet is working properly.
  • Switch from Wi Fi to mobile data, or the other way around.
  • Fully close Instagram and open the app again.
  • Check the App Store or Google Play for an available update.

You use your account on many devices or in many locations

If an account suddenly becomes active on several devices, networks or locations, Instagram may become extra cautious. This can happen with business accounts that several people log in to, or with accounts managed through external tools.

Two people managing one account is usually fine, but many changing logins can trigger warnings. Log out on devices you do not use and change your password if you think someone else may have access.

What can you do when Instagram blocks following?

The best solution depends on the cause. Always start with simple checks before assuming you have been banned.

1. Stop following, liking and commenting for a while

If Instagram has limited your action, pressing the follow button repeatedly usually does not help. In fact, it can cause Instagram to keep seeing the same action attempts.

Leave your account alone for a bit. Use Instagram normally, perhaps viewing your feed or Stories, but do not start following, liking or commenting in bulk again. Wait calmly until the limit disappears.

2. Check whether you already follow 7500 accounts

Go to your profile and tap the number of accounts you follow. If you are close to 7500, that is probably the reason. Unfollow some accounts, then try following someone again.

Do this slowly. If you unfollow a very large number of people all at once, that can also look unnatural.

3. Restart the Instagram app

Fully close Instagram rather than just minimising it. Then open the app again and try to follow one profile. If it still does not work, move on to the next checks.

4. Update or reinstall Instagram

An old app version can cause strange errors. Check whether an update is available. If the app often freezes or buttons do not respond, reinstalling it can help.

Reinstalling will not delete your account. You will need to log in again, so make sure you know your password or have access to your email or mobile number.

5. Test on another device or in the browser

Try logging in on another mobile, tablet or through Instagram in your browser. If following works there, the problem is likely with your app or device. If it does not work anywhere, there is a greater chance that your account is temporarily limited.

6. Report the problem to Instagram

If you think Instagram has limited you unfairly, you can report the issue in the app. Go to your settings, open the help section and choose the option to report a problem. You can also visit the general Instagram Help Centre.

Keep your report short and clear. For example: “I cannot follow any accounts, even after restarting and updating the app. Could you please check my account?”

How long does an Instagram block last?

A temporary block can last a short time, but sometimes it can last several days. Instagram does not always show exactly how long it will last. Sometimes you will see a message with a date or time when you can use actions again.

The duration often depends on:

  • how new your account is;
  • how often you have been limited before;
  • how many actions you performed in a short time;
  • whether you used external tools or automatic services;
  • whether Instagram also sees other parts of your account as suspicious.

New accounts are limited faster than older accounts with normal use. Repeated blocks can also last longer. If you start following many people again straight after a block, you increase the chance that Instagram will limit you again.

How to avoid getting blocked again

Once you can follow again, it is a good idea to keep your behaviour calmer for a while. Creators, small businesses and fan accounts often want to grow quickly, but aggressive following usually works against you in the long run.

Use Instagram as if you are talking to real people

Follow accounts because you genuinely find their content interesting. Reply with normal comments that suit the post. Do not like dozens of posts in a row too quickly. Instagram is good at spotting repetition, especially when you do the same thing everywhere.

Avoid the old follow and unfollow method

The follow and unfollow method may sound appealing, but it is risky. You follow many people, wait for them to follow back and then unfollow them again. Instagram often sees this as behaviour resembling spam. It also usually brings followers who are not very interested in your content.

If you want to grow, it is better to focus on content that people genuinely want to save, share or watch. Reels, clear carousels, strong captions and active Stories are usually more effective than randomly following lots of people.

Do not use automatic follow tools

Tools that automatically follow people, like posts or post comments can put your account at risk. Even if they say they are safe, Instagram still actively fights this type of behaviour.

If you want to support your Instagram visibility without using following practices that resemble spam, take a measured look at the Instagram options in the SocialKings Instagram category. For some accounts, extra social proof can help alongside good content, for example through buying Instagram followers, buying Instagram likes or buying Instagram views. At the same time, keep posting normally and talking with your community, because a healthy profile is not only about numbers.

Clean up your following list from time to time

If you follow close to 7500 accounts, Instagram becomes less pleasant to use. Your feed becomes crowded and you can no longer follow interesting new accounts. Clean it up from time to time, but do not remove hundreds of accounts all at once.

Are you losing followers instead? Something else may be going on, such as inactive followers, changed content or too much promotion. What you should not do

If following does not work, it is normal to want a quick fix. Still, many people accidentally make the problem worse. In particular, avoid these things:

  • Keep tapping the follow button: wait instead of trying the same action repeatedly.
  • Immediately keep liking and commenting: if following is limited, other actions may also be affected.
  • Unfollow many accounts at once: unfollowing large numbers of accounts can also look suspicious.
  • Connect automatic tools: anything that performs actions for you can create risk.
  • Create a new account and do the same thing: new accounts are often limited even faster.

Frequently asked questions about being unable to follow anyone on Instagram

Why can I like posts but not follow anyone?

Instagram can limit one type of action separately. It is possible that you can still like posts or watch Stories, but you cannot follow new accounts for a while. This often happens after many follow actions in a short time or when you have reached the 7500 following limit.

Why does the follow button keep jumping back?

If the follow button jumps back, your action probably was not saved. This can be caused by a temporary block, an app error or a poor connection. First, test your internet and app. If it still does not work, wait for a while before trying again.

Can someone block me so I cannot follow them?

Yes. If you cannot follow only one specific profile, that person may have blocked you or the account may no longer be available. If you cannot follow anyone, the problem is probably with your own account, app or connection.

Do I always get a message when Instagram blocks me?

No, not always. Sometimes Instagram shows a clear message, but sometimes you only notice it because actions do not work. If several actions fail at the same time, a temporary limitation is likely.

Does logging out and logging back in help?

Sometimes it does, especially if the app is not syncing properly. Log out, fully close the app and log back in. If your account is truly temporarily limited, that usually will not remove the block straight away.

Can I ask Instagram to remove the block faster?

You can report the problem in the app or through the Instagram Help Centre, but there is no guarantee that Instagram will respond faster or remove the limit straight away. If the block is temporary, waiting is often the quickest solution.

The fastest solution if you can no longer follow anyone

First, check your internet, restart the app and see whether you already follow 7500 accounts. If none of those is the problem, you probably have a temporary action block. Stop following, liking, commenting and unfollowing for a while. Wait calmly, then slowly build your activity back up.

Most problems happen because Instagram sees behaviour that is too fast or too repetitive. Use your account more naturally, avoid automatic tools and focus on content that people genuinely respond to. This will make it much less likely that you will be blocked again.
