Instagram likes: can you see who liked your post?

Yes. On a regular Instagram post, you can see which accounts have liked it. Open the post and tap the number of likes below the photo, video or carousel, or tap others. Instagram will then display the list of usernames that have liked the post at that time.

What can the owner of an Instagram post see?

What can other people see about likes?

Meta explains the basic rule clearly: when you like a photo or video, that action is visible to anyone who can see the post. Your username may appear below the post. When there are multiple likes, Instagram sometimes displays the total count and the names of accounts that the viewer follows.

A visitor can usually tap the like information and open the list. Whether they can do so depends on the post’s visibility. For a public post, the potential group of visitors is larger than it is for a post from a private account.

The main rule is that a like is a visible interaction. You deliberately tap the heart and connect your username to the post. Having a private account does not automatically make every action you take outside your own profile private.

What changes with a private account?

What does it mean when the like count is hidden?

Instagram lets you hide like counts in two ways. You can choose not to see the counts on posts from other accounts. You can also decide that other people should not see the total number of likes and views on your own feed post.

Hiding the count does not remove the likes. The hearts remain active, and the accounts that liked the post stay connected to it. The owner can still view the total on their own post.

What happens when someone removes a like?

When someone taps the coloured heart again, the like is removed. The username then disappears from the current list of likes, and the total number of likes is updated.

Meta warns that an earlier push notification may already have been sent. Therefore, if someone likes a post by mistake and removes the heart immediately, the owner may still briefly have seen a notification containing the username.

In the activity list, the notification should disappear quickly. However, you cannot take back something that a person has already read on a mobile, tablet, smartwatch or lock screen.

A removed like is therefore not proof that the owner never saw the earlier interaction. Conversely, a missing name in the current list is not a reliable way to determine when someone removed the like.

Instagram does not give the owner a separate report of all old and removed likes. Apps that claim to show this type of secret history usually have no reliable official source for that claim.

Are Story likes the same as likes on regular posts?

No. A like on an Instagram Story is a private reaction to the Story creator. The like does not appear as a public number below the Story. Other viewers also cannot see who sent a heart.

The creator can open the Story viewer information. There, the creator can see which accounts viewed it and which accounts liked the Story, provided that information is available within Instagram.

This is a different system from the visible list of likes on a regular feed post. On a feed post, anyone who has access to the post can, in principle, view the likes. On a Story, the heart remains directed towards the creator.

Do not confuse a Story like with an emoji reaction or a written reply. A reply may appear as a message in Instagram Direct. The exact layout and delivery depend on the account’s current message settings.

By contrast, a regular feed post provides a visible like linked to the post and your username. Stories normally disappear after their set period unless the creator saves them as a highlight or archives them in another way.

Can you see who only viewed your post?

No. For a regular photo or carousel, you do not receive a list naming everyone who only looked at it. Likes and comments are visible actions. A silent view of a feed post is not.

For Reels and videos, view totals may be available. For professional accounts, Instagram Insights provides figures such as views, accounts reached, interactions and engaged accounts.

Meta explains that reach is the number of unique accounts that saw content on their screen at least once. Views can also include repeated displays of the same content. This is why the number of views and the reach may differ.

What do Instagram Insights show about likes?

Instagram Insights are available at no cost on business accounts and creator accounts. You can open Insights from your profile or from your own post or Reel. There, you will see interactions, reach and views, among other information.

Use Insights mainly to understand patterns in your content’s performance. For example, you can compare the following:

• how many accounts a post reached;
• how many likes and comments the post received;
• what proportion of engaged accounts were followers or people who did not follow you;
• how a Reel performed compared with other Reels;
• whether a post was saved or shared often;
• which topics generate the most engagement across multiple posts.

Insights are not a tool for tracking secret visitors. The data mainly consists of combined figures. You do not receive a complete list naming people who only watched silently.

Instead, consider trends across multiple posts. A post with a lot of reach and few likes is not automatically bad. People may have read the information but had no reason to tap the heart.

Compare posts that have the same goal. An informative carousel may receive more saves, while a personal photo receives more likes. A Reel may receive many views without every viewer visiting your profile.

Why do apps still promise a secret list of likes or visitors?

Apps from other providers often use appealing phrases such as “secret fans”, “deleted likes” or “profile visitors”. These claims go beyond what Instagram officially shows ordinary users.

An app can process public information such as visible likes, comments and followers. This does not mean the app has access to a hidden viewer list. Some services only produce an estimate based on public interactions.
