Instagram applies the change as soon as you switch it off. The setting applies to the Instagram account that is open at that moment.

Active status is used mainly in Instagram Direct. If the feature is on, a green dot or a time stamp may appear next to your profile photo. Other people can then see, for example, that you are active now or were active recently.

According to Instagram, this information is visible to people you follow and people you exchange messages with. So not every random visitor to your profile automatically sees when you are online. The signals mainly appear in chats and in the messages area.

Turning it off can feel better if you want less pressure to reply right away. People will no longer see through the activity status that you are using Instagram at that moment.

This does not make you completely invisible. Someone may still notice other actions. Think of a new like, a comment, a Story view, or a message you just sent. This setting only hides activity status. It does not hide everything you do on Instagram.

The setting also does not block anyone. Existing conversations stay available. People can still send you a message if your message and message request settings allow it. Do you want to decide who can contact you? Then also check the separate settings for messages and message requests.

Where is activity status in Instagram?

In the Instagram app, the feature is found in the settings for messages and story replies. The most common path is:

Open Instagram.

Sign in to the right account.

Tap your profile photo in the bottom right.

Tap the three lines in the top right.

Open Messages and story replies.

Choose Show activity status.

Turn the switch off.

In some versions, you first see the title Settings and activity after opening the menu. The exact name or location can change after an update. You normally do not need to go to Accounts Center. Activity status belongs to Instagram’s own interaction and messaging settings.

Also note the difference between Show activity status and Your activity. Under Your activity, you can find information about your time on Instagram, likes, and account history. That section does not determine whether other people can see your online status.

Device

Path in Instagram

Result

Common mistake

iPhone

Profile > menu > Messages and story replies > Show activity status

The green dot and time stamp are hidden

Looking in Accounts Center instead of messages

Android

Profile > menu > Messages and story replies > Show activity status

The green dot and time stamp are hidden

An older app version shows a different menu name

Computer

More > Settings > Messages and story replies > Show activity status

The activity status of the open account is turned off

The wrong Instagram account is open

Image 1: mobile setting. Use a screenshot of the Messages and story replies screen. Point an arrow to the switched-off toggle. Use this caption: “Off means others cannot see your activity status.”

How do you change active status on iPhone and Android?

Before you start, check which account is active. Many people manage a personal profile, business profile, or creator account in the same app. You only change the setting for the account you are using right now.

How do you turn off active status on an iPhone?

Open the Instagram app.

Tap your profile photo in the bottom right.

Check at the top that you are using the correct profile.

Tap the three lines in the top right.

Scroll if needed to the section about interacting with others.

Open Messages and story replies.

Tap Show activity status.

Turn the switch off.

You do not need to tap a save button afterward. Go back to your profile once the switch is off. If you then open your inbox, you will also no longer see the activity status of other accounts.

How do you turn off active status on Android?

Open Instagram and go to your profile.

Check that the correct account is active.

Tap the menu with the three lines in the top right.

Open Messages and story replies.

Choose Show activity status.

Turn the switch off.

The menu position may differ slightly depending on your screen size, language, or app version. Use the search field inside settings if Instagram shows one. Search for “activity status.” Do not choose Your activity, because that is a different section.

How do you check whether the change worked?

Open the setting again and look at the switch. If it is off, your choice has been saved. You will usually notice it in your inbox too. The green dots and time stamps from other accounts are no longer visible there.

Want extra certainty? Test the setting with a second account. That account must follow you or have had a Direct conversation with you before. Open the messages area with the second account and check whether the green dot and time stamp are missing from your profile.

A screen can temporarily show old data. So close the messages area and open it again before deciding whether the change works. It can also help to fully close the Instagram app and reopen it.

Do not use an unknown app or website to check your activity status. You never need to enter your Instagram password anywhere outside Instagram to test this privacy setting. Services that ask for your password can put your account at risk.

How does activity status work on a computer?

On a computer, you can change active status through instagram.com. Follow these steps:

Open instagram.com and sign in.

Check that you are using the correct account.

Click More in the bottom left.

Choose Settings.

Open Messages and story replies.

Click Show activity status.

Turn the switch off.

The result is the same on an iPhone, Android device, and computer. The activity status of the selected account is hidden. On every device, you also lose the ability to view the activity status of others.

Only the start of the path is different. On a phone, you open settings through your profile photo and the three lines. On instagram.com, you start in the bottom left with More. After that, on both devices, you go to Messages and story replies.

You normally do not need to turn the status off separately on every phone, tablet, or computer. It is an account setting, not a setting that applies to only one device. Do you have multiple Instagram accounts? Then check and change the setting for each account separately.

The names may differ depending on your language or Instagram version. In an English-language environment, the relevant option is called Show Activity Status. In its official help, Instagram mentions Android, iPhone, computer, mobile browser, Instagram Lite, and iPad.

A switch can have a different color in light and dark mode. So pay attention mainly to the position of the switch, not just the color. Open the setting again if you are unsure.

What can you do if the setting does not work?

Usually no error message appears. The most common problem is that the option is missing or the change does not seem visible right away. In that case, calmly go through the checks below.

You do not see Show activity status

First check that you are looking under Messages and story replies. Your activity and Accounts Center are different sections. Use the search function in settings if it is available.

Then update the Instagram app through the App Store or Google Play. Instagram recommends updating the app first if a feature is missing or not working correctly. Also check whether your phone is using the latest available system version.

After an update, the option may temporarily be in a slightly different place. Close Instagram completely, reopen the app, and check the settings again.

The switch does not respond

Close Instagram completely and restart the app. If that does not help, restart your phone. Then test the setting once on Wi-Fi and once on mobile data. That helps rule out a temporary connection problem.

You can also try the change through instagram.com. Sign in and go to More > Settings > Messages and story replies > Show activity status. Turn the switch off there.

You no longer see the activity status of others

This is not an error. Instagram links both sides of the feature together. If your activity status is off, you cannot see who is active, who was active recently, or who is in a conversation at the same time as you.

Do you want to see that information again? Then follow the same path and turn your own activity status back on. The relevant accounts can then see your status again too.

Someone says you still seem active

First ask what the person is actually seeing. A new message, a like, a reaction, or a Story view can show that you used Instagram. That is not the same as the green activity indicator or the notice that you were active recently.

Then check whether you changed the setting on the correct account. Open the switch again. After that, close the messages screen on both devices and reload it.

If the feature still clearly does not work, go in the app to Profile > menu > Help > Report a problem. Describe clearly what you see. You can add a screenshot if needed, but make sure names and sensitive message content are not visible.

What changes after turning it off?

After turning it off, people you follow and people you exchange messages with can no longer see through activity status when you were last active or that you are active now. The special signal that you are active in a conversation at the same time is also no longer shown as activity information.

On the other hand, you can no longer view the activity status of others. You will not be able to see whether someone is active now, was active recently, or is present in a conversation at the same time. That can make conversations feel calmer. However, you have less information about when a reply is likely to come.

What stays the same?

Your profile remains findable according to your existing privacy choices.

Your followers and following list stay the same.

Your posted photos, videos, Reels, and Stories are not deleted.

Your old Direct conversations and their content remain.

People can still message you according to your existing message settings.

Likes, comments, and Story views are not hidden.

Your account type does not change.

Your reach and stats are not directly changed by this choice.

Turning off active status does not make a public account private. If you want to prevent unknown people from seeing all your content, you need to set your account to private separately. For a business profile, different options apply, because that type of profile is normally public.

The choice also does not stop Instagram from suggesting content or accounts to you. Do you want to see fewer recommendations? Then use the separate guide to turn off suggestions for you on Instagram.

The setting also does not tell you who opened your profile. Instagram does not offer a regular visitor list for profiles. If in doubt, read how to delete an Instagram account permanently. That helps you avoid confusing activity status with profile visits.

Does active status affect your growth?

Turning off your active status does not change how many people can view your posts, Stories, or Reels. The setting only affects visible information in and around messages. So you can continue posting and replying as usual.

If you want more privacy and better visibility at the same time, focus on strong content, a consistent posting rhythm, and clear interaction with your audience. As an extra step, you can buy Instagram followers or Instagram likes from SocialKings. These choices are separate from your activity status.

For videos and Reels, view count is a separate metric. That is not hidden or removed when you turn off your active status. If you want to give a video extra attention, you can also buy Instagram views. Always keep posting relevant content that fits your audience.

Are read receipts turned off too?

No. Activity status is about whether you are active now or when you were last active. A notice that a message has been seen is a different signal. So do not assume read receipts disappear automatically.

Check the separate messaging settings if you want to manage read receipts. Available options may differ by account, app version, or region.

Frequently asked questions about active status

Where do I find the option to turn off my active status?

In the app, go to your profile and tap the three lines in the top right. Open Messages and story replies. Then choose Show activity status and turn the switch off. On a computer, start at More > Settings.

Does turning off active status work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. Instagram supports this setting on iPhone and Android. The path and the result are almost the same. You can also manage the status on a computer or through a mobile browser.

Can I undo the change later?

Yes. You can turn activity status back on at any time. Follow the same path and turn the switch on. After that, the relevant accounts can see your status again and you can view the status of others again.

Why do I not see the option?

You are probably looking under Your activity or in Accounts Center. The correct place is Messages and story replies. Update the Instagram app, restart it, and search for “activity status” in settings if the option is still missing.

Can I hide my status from one person?

The normal activity status switch applies to the whole account. It does not let you choose one specific person. Do you want to limit contact or visibility for a certain account? Then look at the options to restrict, block, and manage message requests. Each of these features has a different effect.

Does turning it off affect existing content?

No. Your posts, Reels, Stories, followers, and Direct conversations are not deleted or changed. Only the visible information about when you are active changes. Other actions, such as likes, comments, and Story views, may still remain visible where Instagram normally shows them.

Does the green dot disappear right away?

Usually the change is applied immediately. Sometimes an open screen still shows old information. Close the messages area and open it again. Then check whether the switch is still off.

Can people still see that I viewed a Story?

Yes. Turning off your active status does not hide Story views. The owner of a Story can still see your account in the viewer list as long as Instagram makes that information available.

Can people still message me?

Yes. Active status does not block messages. People can still message you according to your existing conversation and message request settings. Adjust those settings separately if you want fewer messages.

What is the best first step?

Open your Instagram profile and go to Messages and story replies > Show activity status. Turn the switch off. Then check whether you no longer see the activity of other accounts. That is a clear sign that the change is active.

Next, decide which problem you want to solve. Do you only want to appear less visible online? Then this setting is usually enough. Do you want fewer suggestions? Then adjust recommendations separately. Is another feature not working properly, such as audio in a Story or Reel? Then check the fixes for when Instagram music is not working.

Try not to change many privacy options at once. Adjust one setting first and check the result. That keeps things clear and makes it easy to turn active status back on later.

You can turn off your Instagram active status through Profile > menu > Messages and story replies > Show activity

[1666

post-207903","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-instagram-en
["GET
